Well, I'll tag onto this thread, since I'm from Australia too. Central-western area of the state of New South Wales.

I've always been interested in self-reliance. Born a country boy, trained in agricultural science but then worked in information technology, mostly in Sydney but later back in the country, for some decades. Now medically retired and back on the family farm.

Have been on various self-reliance, prep, and homesteading type forums under various noms since before 2000, and reading like magazines before then.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I have only just been able to get back on this site because for some reason my IP address was blocked, but whatever the problem was, it seems to have been resolved now.

Someone asked about defense. Well, no guns around here, with our laws. You have to have a very good reason and living on a suburban block doesn't give you one. The good thing is that not many other people have guns either. If I could legally get one, I would.
We have got a very good network of neighbours and friends who look out for each other. Our neighbours will look after our chooks, pick up mail and papers and keep an eye on things if we are away and we will do the same for them. Our church has a good pastoral care program as well. We live in an area that does not see a lot of trouble, but if things went to pieces and people started to get hungry, I'm not sure how things would turn out. I have worked out a few ideas for passive defense. I've recently bought a solar powered sensor light, so I'll see how well that works.

Do you enjoy the masterchef Australia show? I've been watching it since season one and enjoy it. The latest season of Junior Masterchef Australia has started and I've found the first 4 episodes (patiently waiting to find the 5th one when it is available).

I have watched a bit of Masterchef but I'm more interested in the type of cooking show where they take the food from the garden and use it in simple ways. I love cooking, but my food is usually cooked from scratch, good and simple. I often cook a meal where all or most of the vegetables are from our garden, add an egg or 2 and I've got a well balanced meal. I cook things like sponge rolls, pavlovas, chocolate cake or mousse for special occasions. I don't cook them too much because then I'll eat them :D !

Ruthmary - So for cooks maybe Maggie Beer? Or for a show the first couple seasons of Good Chef Bad Chef (the ones with Gary Mehigan)?

The food you mentioned sounds really good. Would you want to share the chocolate mousse recipe you use?
