  • Prepping in Eastern Oregon

New to the site. Can always learn something from someone.

My wife and I seriously started looking for retreat property in 2006. In 2007 we bought a 160 acre farm in Eastern Oregon. There was a large machine shed on the property, that really turned out to be one of best features of the entire farm. We both are resident elsewhere so the first thing we did was store a travel trailer inside the machine shed so we have a place to stay during our trips to the farm.

The machine shed was hardened to foil potential break ins and secured with various internet gadgets that we can remotely monitor 24/7.

Since then we have added vehicles including a recent purchase of a 2000 F-350 diesel with 6 speed transmission and the legendary 7.3 powerstroke engine. There are about five pieces of electronics in these trucks that I need to backup against EMP damage. 700 gallons of stored diesel is on the property along with 150 gallons of propane for the travel trailer. The diesel is treated and I also have a diesel conditioner / filer that I recycle all the diesel through every six months.

There is plenty of water as the property is on a river and we have a good well.

Dehydrated food storage in #10 cans will last two people for three months and we are planning for more. The shed is unheated and so in order to maximize shelf life we have placed all the #10 cans inside a converted chest freezer that maintains a constant 45 degree temperature.

We are looking to add a 1800 rpm 10kw diesel generator in the near future. Yes they are rather expensive.

Just about every trip we add more hand tools, chainsaws, pots, water filters, clothing, sandbags and commodities.

Just starting into the gun thing and have a Glock 45, S&W .22lr and a Armalite AR-10 with ACOG scope. A Mossberg shotgun is next on the list. My wife is looking at a 9mm. I began knowing nothing about firearms and do recommend the Front Site courses as useful training.

We have $300 of pre 1965 silver buried out by the river.

At some point we wil start on construction of a home. At present the travel trailer is good enough for the seven weeks we are on site.

Our particular area consists of rather remote farm properties. Most of the people have lived in the area for several generations. The people seem friendly although it will likely prove more difficult than we think to transition from being visitors to more permanent residents.

Bugging out from our current locations to the retreat is another worry as the distance factor is > 1000 miles. Permanently moving to the retreat is a dream although at this stage not really practical as we would only be able to make a fraction of our current incomes by relocating.

So as you can see, just really starting out on our survivalist journey. We feel blessed that we were able to generate enough financial resources in our lives to implement stocking a retreat location. Which will make for a wonderful retirement home at some point in the future.
