Although new here, I am a senior with gobs of reloading experiences ( grandson is a good reloader) , member of many shooting forums, AF Nam Era SAC pilot, retired Pan Am Capt, gardener, survival schools graduate, raise bees and veggies, welder, electrical work on off grid systems ( mine only ), old time diesel owner ( '80 MB, 95 Cummins) , son is almost a pro hunter, conservative Christian, married 46 years etc, etc.

Nope, I was a gas passer. In Nam, I had the dubious honor of being on the ground at the Bay when it was attacked by rockets. We were one of three birds to survive and make it out. One hole in the main tank. Yep< I am overbore everywhere I go.

I would love to hear of your reloading experiences, especially any you have with 40 S&W.

My 40 or so years of reloading is limited to:
Rifle: 30-06 for Garand, 300wsm, 7.62 for M1A, 308 for 1,000 yd bolt, 5.56, 6.5X55
Handgun: 9mm for wife, .45 acp for me, .357 for nostalgia. I run 5 different presses.

As QM for our start up PD, I sugest Hornady Critical Defense with polymer tip for .40's

I have dies for 38/357, 45 Colt, and 30-06 (have a Garand:D). Later on, if I'm any good at it, will be 44, 45ACP, 45-70, maybe 8X57.
Since I have firearms in 20 different gauges and calibers, reloading has become essential.:cool:

Rice Paddy Daddy... I will offer this suggestion, from my years in reloading:

1 start with ONLY one Caliber.
2. for ease in managing your loads, I would ~suggest~ a pistol cartridge, with a Carbide Die, like a 357 or 45 Colt.
3. get Lee's book on Reloading, it is IMHO, the best overall SIMPLY Explained... there are better, but More Technical, not always good for the beginner!
4. Work ONLY with One Gun Powder, at first!
5. Choose ONLY one Primer at a time for constant & consistent results.
6. work your loads UP not down. Start with lower powder charges. Never load a first time charge at Max Charge, minimum, go down 10 percent. that is a MUST do.


the why's are simple, learn your cartridge, and reduce errors creeping in via two gun powders, or two cartridges, with different spec, Rifle cartridges you must deal with shoulder issues, while straight wall revolver cartridges are that: straight, easy to set up, and repeat in accuracy.

Gun Powders, learning One takes away potential troubles, in measuring the amount to charge a case, having more than one Gun Powder available, to grab by mistake (when reloading ALL other gun powders should be stored OFF your bench)!

Also add in only One Variable at a time, say, go from one style bullet, to another, or change the weight of a bullet NOT BOTH. there is difference between setting off a cartridge loaded with a Lead Projectile weighing 158 grains, and a jacketed Projectile weighing 158 grains!

'George' writes about shooting a XXX Max load in the same make you have??? drop ten percent off His Load, to test your weapon, After checking if his load is even recommended as a load.

That is one reason I will not post load data on what I reload. I know it works in my gun, I do not know YOUR gun.

So, Keep it simple, and do lots of practice shooting....

Now, one thing you can do, safely:

Same Projectile, make ten of one weight of Gun Powder, 10 more of another weight, 10 more another weight. use a fine tip Marks all, or different colors Marks all, to label differences.

Last, the MOST important thing would be Log everything you do: 6.8 grains, Bulls Eye, XXX Flat Nosed Jacketed, 10 rounds. Shot August 1st, wind temperature, etc.

extreme data??? no, because you find our that a certain load is Prime for YOUR Barrel, and you keep it.... six months later, it is 32 degrees, and surprise, it does not shoot as good, but a change in XX grains of the same powder shoots as good. that means you can roll out a winter cartridge, with confidence... as well as a summer load.... granted that is more in the Rifle Cartridges... but stay consistent in data!

I hope that helps... even though it is in introductions... not guns section....
