  • Hello from SW Florida

I stumbled across this forum searching for gardening advice for my local area but having surfed around a bit, I am intrigued. I am a student of history and as such am endlessly disturbed by current events. So much so that my husband and I are planning to purchase a sailboat here shortly and are working towards a plan that would enable us to live on it full time, as far from anyone's grid as possible.

While tied to land, finishing school, I've been working on vegetable gardening in containers and trying to figure out what could work with exposure to salt air. So far I've only succeeded with lettuce, onions, and a few herbs, but it's a start right - they go well with fish! I probably should have started with learning how to garden in regular soil first, but I did not have the land to try until this season. Not sure if I will be able to contribute much since my plan is actually to downsize and minimize, but I can already tell I will enjoy doing a bit of research here.

Thank you for the welcomes. I did try a few tomatoes last season and they were weakened by the salt air exposure and then the bugs and diseases took over. At least on a boat offshore I won't have to worry about those, maybe. I just need to find a rugged variety that will stand up to the exposure - trying 8 different types this coming season so, hopefully at least one will work out. Going to start a plot in the ground as well so that I still have a harvest if/when my container experiments fail and still be able to practice seed collection.

                  Hi CM,

Glad to see someone else here from the Cape. I sent you a PM about gardening. Since I live in the NW Cape we are very close so if you would like to see my back yard just let me know. I've been gardening here since around '94 so I have some experience. Hope to talk soon.
