  • I AM

I am manowar, an american ex pat living in the north ontario woods, mostly a nomad, at least until 7 yrs ago when i met my current wife, i am also known as defender, if you google both you may begin to understand the man that i am.
I have the great fortune of being trained by an experienced bushman who is well known but whom i will not name for now. I have a solid military background and am well trained in wilderness rescue and medical skills also competent in rope rescue and navigation.
My main strenght other than my medical skill, is wild edibles an also have a strong interest in cooking, cuz knowing how to tie the two together is important.
I live mostly off the grid outside of a very small town, pretty much at the edge of civilisation, go a few miles north and i can dissappear into the wild, but i am only about 300 miles north of 5 million folks whom i am sure will want to head up here when the balloon goes up.
I like to post and read about food -storing, gathering and prepareing. To me that is the most important.
i look forward to meeting those who are serious about preparing for the coming event.
i am also happy that you have a prayer section here as i am a learning christian, altho i have a hard time with the whole turn the other cheeck thing, more of an eye for an eye type of fella, but that is why I am manowar......

Welcome, I'm just here learning. What is mostly off grid? Just curious. Also does that mean you know a lot about wild edibles? Could you go into those woods and eat for several days? (Have you tried it?). Sorry, I'm nosy but I really do want to learn more about wild edibles myself. I don't know nearly enough and could never live off of what is in the woods here by the house but I am sure if I knew more I could do better. We live in the country well out of town here but there aren't the forests here in the South like there are up North (I am originally from NH) so to me it never seems the same. You can't get lost in the woods here, there are 4 wheeler trails EVERYWHERE that will always lead you out. No real forests :(

thanks all for the welcome, my time here will be hit and miss as spring is very busy here on the homestead.
becky, to answer your question, mostly off the grid means i do have electricty, but sewer, water and heat is from the land. As far as going svereal days into the wild for food, i have done it but that also meant trapping. just eating roots, tubers, berries, leaves ect can really be boring and bland. I have studies edibles for 4 yrs now and realized that knowing how to really cook from scratch is the secret, makeing my own bread with berries or seeds is possible cuz of my set up at home, same as boiling some nettle leaves in a crude pot vs a nice nettle/jearusalum artichocke puree taste much better. my reason for studying edibles is health and also finance, but the ease at which i can eat from the land, combined with the knowledge of how to put it toghether. most classes i have been to have been with great cooks, eating a rose hip ain't the same as making a raspberry rosehip jam, understand my thoughts?
