  • A hello from Indiana

    Hello all!

Thought I would take the time to introduce myself!

    My name is Ken.

I was born and raised on a farm here in Indiana, I still live out in the county, although we don't farm anymore.
Though we "Me and the wife" do have a garden we tend and I hunt and fish for food "No trophy hunter here" we try to live off the land the best we can!
I started out hunting at a young age, I was 7 when my dad took me on my first rabbit hunt, being the youngest of six brothers, I had plenty of teachers around me, and followed them into the woods regularly.
I guess you can call me a natural outdoors-man by way of self inflicted situations, by the time I was 12, I was traipsing off to the woods and spending days on end camping, hunting and fishing, my favorite time of year was in winter, especially the time between Christmas and new years, "No school"
I loved it when there was snow on the ground, I would leave the house and not go back home for 3 or 4 days, spend the time setup with a lean-too, a camp fire, hunt for my supper with an old single shot .22 or a sling shot "Wrist rocket we called them back then"
I would clean and dress whatever it was I got, be it a rabbit or squirrel, and cook it over the fire like the mountain men did that I had seen in movies.
I would always take along some canned goods from my moms pantry, a couple of pots and pans, a canteen, some basic camping items like a hatchet, canvas tarp for the lean-too, a sleeping bag and so forth and I would have the time of my life out there all by myself!

Growing up this way taught me a lot about survival on your own, and prepared me for this time we are living in where anything could happen to take away those comforts we have all gotten so used to!
I do not know it all, and will never claim to, though I think I am a little better prepared than your average citizen.
I will share what I have learned over the years about hunting, trapping and fishing and genneral living off the land, if others here will share with me their own knowledge and findings to help me with getting things ready, as for some reason, I find myself compelled to start squirreling away things for some unknown pending doom that has been nagging at me recently, and feel I need to start learning as much as I can for surviving something big.
I wish I could put my finger on what it is, but I guess just getting prepared will have to do, and let the future take care of itself!

    Thanks!
    Ken.

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

      Welcome!

Your mention of a Wrist Rocket brought back memories, I still have the one I had as a kid. I've put a bunch of new bands on it over the years.

        Thanks guys!

Benn, thats good to hear theres some originals still out there!
I lost my wrist rocket when I was crossing a river "Little turtle river" that was frozen, it was in a pack I had to chuck when I fell through the ice when I was 15, almost lost me along with it.
Had a blast with that sling shot, "This was back in the 1970's BTW"
