Only temporarily though ;) I'll be retiring from the military next fall and moving home to Texas :) I lived in Florida for many years and was always well supplied because of the threat of hurricanes. I prepped heavily for Y2K and was happy to see that enough was fixed in time to avoid wide-spread issues. My primary reason for prepping now is that I feel there is a serious threat of economic collapse. It may be delayed, but I believe that it is only a matter of time. I have no faith in the government to take care of us.
Secondary threats I have concerns about are problems with the electrical grid due to solar activity ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_storm_of_1859 ) and the the potential for a super volcano erupting from the Yellowstone Caldera ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowstone_Caldera ).
A solar storm like the one that occurred in 1859 today could cause the power grid to go down for the entire planet. Hopefully it won't. It could take years for them to get the grid back up. Some scientists believe it's possible during our current solar cycle that is going to peak in late 2012 to early 2013.
One estimate I saw if the Yellowstone Caldera were to blow included everything within 500 miles being obliterated and the potential for a cloud of ash that could literally blot out the sun for a period of years. I pray neither one of those happens.
I look forward reading everyones posts and hope that I may be able to contribute in some small way from time to time.
