If you might want ballistic cover around the homestead this is a very inexpensive way to do it. On the range we used 2x6 walls with treated ply wood, but you can used any wood painted kept dry etc.. For more depth you can use rough cut 2x8 but it must be kept dry. Cedar posts can be used although each post will be a weak point unless staggered with two thinner walls. The key to this is pea gravel, this is tougher then concrete for this use and much cheaper. PEA GRAVEL not 3/4, not rock. You may fill the pea gravel with dry sand but all must be kept dry. We used farmers heavy mill plastic on each wall and folded over at top and capped with a 1x? painted and on an angle to allow water run off. The key is dry and loose . When an object hits this, the pea gravel moves and spreads the energy across a greater area. If you want to try it make a small section and try shooting it with several cal. rifles. The wood on the face will give out over time but it will take much abuse. The other method is tires laid on the ground and filled with any loose dense matter and capped with ready mix. Tires should be staggered to cover the thin areas. a cedar pole once in awhile will keep wall from falling over. Tires are most often free. They can be painted. Something to keep in the back of your mind for future ref:.

I have seen several "earthen" homes made from used tires, filled with agragate (Soils). They were supposed to be very energy efficient as well. I also believe several shoot houses are made with used tires filled with chopped up (bits and pieces) of used tires. Thunder ranch has one and there are several others. Lots of used tires in the world, has me a thinking....
