Getting Rid Of Skunks?

My Rott got sprayed by a skunk on the 13th and here we are on the 22nd and he still STINKS. We did all the stuff the vet suggested but now we're just letting father time take care of it.

My question; are there ways of trapping these little B@#%*#$s? This is the first time he's gotten it but the neighbor down the roads dog has been hosed several times so there are quite a few in the area.

I have so far this month have trapped 3 of them. I use a have a heart live trap, DON'T laugh. Anyway I use a can of sardines for bait don't open can all the way, just peel lid back about an inch so they can smell it but can't really get it. Put this in the back of the trip platform, all the way to the rear of the trap. If you cover the trap they won't spray. You can terminate as you wish . I do not let them walk off, Spine shot is good from 25 ft. away ,a lake !!!??? . If you feel warm an fuzzy take em to the woods let em go, keep covered while you slide up the back door calmly walk back and let them walk away. Even if they don't spray they will stink a little.

I'm up to 7 skunks, most taken with a m-rod .25 cal air rifle at 40-50 yards. Bait them to the same spot with cat food and bacon grease. one shot ea. no noise ,late at night, use a driveway dinger to alert me. !one shot right to the pumkin.very little smell. They seem to like cat food. seal em right away in a zip lock 2 gal bag, use the bag inside out to pick up and fold into bag.PS make sure they are really dead.

That's interesting I always thought that if you shot them they would spray as a involuntary response. Good to know

The skunk may dribble a little bit. But a good solid head, spine or heart shot stops them. I have a lot of friends who slowly walk up to skunks in their traps and have a syringe of acetone on the end of a pole and inject this behind the shoulder / heart area and the skunk calmly passes away. THAT IS NOT TO SAY THAT ONCE IN AWHILE THEY DON'T , LEAK AND STILL SMELL but that is localized and not to bad. I Believe they have to be able to squeeze the glands at the rear end to spray, if they can't do that the most you get is a dribble.

PS make sure they are really dead.

I think this is a good safety tip that can be easily overlooked. At least it was for me & my cousin when we 13 y/o and running my uncle's trap lines in Oklahoma. Picking up an undead/still living skunk will definitely result in you getting sprayed.... as we both found out.

Benn, try washing your Rott with Woolite for Delicates. Let it sit in for about 5 minutes before rinsing.
I recall my old vet using this to take care of his skunked Rotts.

Thanks Daelith, Ill pick some up just to keep on hand for the next time. I hope he doesn't chase them anymore but dogs are prone to chasing something running.

I just got my 8TH skunk. 30-40 yards away. It lifted it tail to spray , but I talked nice like to a stray and danged if it didn't lower it tail. Then I wacked it with a hatsan .25 mod 65 air gun high up the shoulders by the spine , it dropped dead. Smelled a little but did not spray. I don't need a litter of them in my barn. As well as the DNR advised that skunks and coon are carrying distemper this year.

I just hope my Rottie doesn't ever tangle with one. She's caught an armadillo, raccoon and has even proven to be a good mouser but we've been lucky so far to avoid skunks. The armadillo was bad enough. I can not tell you how nasty it was to see just how much jaw pressure it takes a Rottweiller to explode an armadillo shell and what a mess it makes.:(

OK all, I have been asking farm's around here how to positively get rid of skunks , no smell. They cover a baited live trap, when a skunk goes into it they pick up the covered trap and go to a pond or creek and place the whole thing in the water wait 5 minutes , pick up the trap from the water and dump out the dead skunk. Sounds a bit cruel , they claim it never smells. I would rather shoot it and put up with a little smell.

3 More skunks , I hope this is the end for the year. This time I covered the trap carried it out a little ways from house. Reached over and opened door. Each of the 3 sauntered out of the trap like they did not have a worry in the world , just walked away , that is until a .25 pellet whacked em at about 30-40 ft away. 2 down no smell, 3 rd sprayed a bit and stunk. BUT they were away from the buildings so it did not matter . They are calm, I just eased up spoke slow and but a small tarp over them tried not to shake the cage. Around here they used to be made into pets but the state banned that. When I was a kid farmers kept em around and would call them to the barn with the cats to drink milk. They kept mice and rats out of the barn. My brother and laws dad had one descented and let it in the house and it sat in his lap. OH for the good old days.

Another skunk , this make's 14 this year. Shot this one at 45 yards at the wood line. Shot thru both shoulders , a little leakage but not to bad of a smell . I kinda hope they are done for the season.
