We've got a wood burning stove for our BOL cabin. Does anyone have any experience installing one? We were just going to put 'fire board' on the walls around it, one under t with bricks on too of that fire board. Then we'd cut the hole in the wall and run our stove pipe out and up. Any suggestions? Does this sound right?

Just make darned sure
Just make darned sure you use triple wall or equivalent for your stovepipe.
Use the use the cut bend and nail deal for the chimney base where it goes thru the roof.
That's what supports your chimney and insulates/protects/keep your house from burning down device.

ditto on the triple wall where it goes through any wall or roof. If it's in a high wind area invest in one of the caps that rotate with the wind directions to help prevent blow back down the chimney.
All stoves burn different some are hard to get going so the chimney 'draws' and sucks the smoke out. Best bet is to use lots of kindling and get a quick hot burn going this will help get the smoke out.Survival question. What do I need most, right now?
