  • Final word on harbor freight solar panel "kit"

On another forum people were talking about their harbor freight solar panel "kits" going bad. If you already have one, so be it, no need to justify your purchase to me. If you bought them years ago when solar prices were higher, you might have done o.k.

Currently however, their is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to waste your money on that crap. It's the same as paying $500. for a used Jennings .22 when a new Glock 17 can be had for $450.

    Here's an option for LESS-

for those looking for a sensible option-

This is the 20 watt panel I was talking about that's done well running gable vent fans- it's up to $32.

    http://www.solarblvd.com/Solar-Panel...duct_info.html

Since I think the CrapboxFreight Panel "kit" is 40 watts IIRC, here is a 40 watt panel , slightly larger version of the 20 above- for just $58.

    http://www.solarblvd.com/Solar-Panel...duct_info.html

Now to be crystal clear, the little radio slack proto box with one led looking "charge controller" that comes with the HF "kit" adds absolutely NO value to the deal.

But if you really want to compare price and figure the controller in, here is a quality low price controller- $49.

    http://www.solarblvd.com/Charge-Cont...duct_info.html

I've used the bigger version of this with a 100 watt panel to charge two T105s that run an on demand pressure pump for water.

So here we go - $58. + $49. = $107. for MUCH BETTER quality components that the little crappola "kit" from Harbor Freight. Last flyer I saw from HF showed a "sale" price of $179. on their little "kit"

BOTTOM LINE- your paying MORE for LESSER QUALITY components with the HF kit.
I just put together a better "kit" for you at a LESSER PRICE.

I'd couple the stuff I listed above with two Trojan T105s and find the least wattage bulbs I could find.

Oh and pocket the $250. difference ;)

Just starting out, a person might be better served by using 12 volt fans and lights. Less in the way of line and conversion losses. LED lights will really extend your run time.

Happened to stop in a HF store during some travels to see what this "kit" cost now-

              $199. "on sale"

So the case is closed on this one. Final verdict- It's a POS and highly OVERPRICED.

50 watt quality panel for $59.

Anyone buying Harbor freight crap after seeing this is an idiot, sorry no nice way to say it. Buying that HF kit now is like paying $500. for a used Jennings .22 while saying the new Glock 17 for $449. was too expensive...

Here is one attempt to spend $494 of the $500 dollars without putting much research into it and using previous mentioned items.

This would allow for some light, a fan, recharge the main batteries, recharge small electrical devices.

I didn't figure the one panel would charge up the batteries in a reasonable time frame. It would be either: get a second panel or have the charger to use when the generator comes out.

It is a coin flip on which way to go.
