  • heard a baby crying outside tonight...

sitting in corner room and heard a baby crying.. then it'd stop... then start again.. long wailing.
    continued...
finally got out the FLIR unit.
stepped to window and couldn't locate anything... no sound. then stepped outside... still no sound. and had unit set on black/white...
then changed to where heat showed a red...
and not far from house on a little trail... was large red item. sort of a large triangle... but I trimmed limbs there this afternoon... shouldn't be any heat
item in that location... then item moved off slowly...4 legged creature..
    no more sounds...

wife tried it also... it took her a few minutes and then she said... "hey, somethings walking up the small hill and going across the flat area.."
I like this little unit... without the flir, nothing could be seen.

yip..rabbits etc will scream/cry ...and yotes will to but it's like a wailing yelp.
even large frogs(seen one being eaten by a indigo that was yelping like a scalded dog)

cool toy to have for sure that has great shtf uses.

RR, you have bobcats where you live?

They can make some eerie sounds out in the woods at night. I heard them sound like babies crying or even women screaming. Kinda puts a chill up your spine when your way out in BFE with no moon. If I weren't in deer camp with a bunch of buddies I might have been just a little sceered. ;)

          benn,
yes. that's my guess... 2 points for benn! a feller nearby has a stuffed one on his bar! approximates the size animal I saw.

One time almost 20 years ago my nephews were hanging around me. The oldest was maybe 10 or 11, the youngest about 9. All city kids.

They wanted to take a short hike with me around the property. I wasn't really dressed for it, wearing shorts. They were acting all hard core- 'we can make it" type talk.

OK, so we maybe walk 1/2 mile or so. One is dragging big time. I hear a little whine here and there. I purposely pick up the pace. Short legs are practically running. We get into some thick brambles, we gotta go through them. I'm bulling through the brambles, it's cutting my legs to ribbons, both legs bloody as all get out. We get through that, go a little further, frequency of whining increases. I do more "listening halts", and act like I'm really hearing something. Whining continues.

I stop the group again- "ssshhh listen". Again they are listening intently, looking around. After a while we start moving again. More whining.

Again I stop them- "sshh listen." Finally they ask what I'm hearing. I reply- "I could have swore I heard a baby crying!"

They listen intently. Oldest nephew (some of you have met at campouts) says "If I found a baby in the woods, I'd take care of it!"

Finally I can't stand it any more, I start laughing. "What?" I reply- "I meant hearing you sorry arses whine like babies!"

After another minute, the sharpest one got what I was saying, the other two kept looking around and listening... LMAO

Crying baby sound could be used as a trick to lure you out of your position to take you hostage. Fortunately you got a FLIR to see which type of beast is out there...if it had been a two legged kind this could have ended differently.
