  • Last Summer was Her turn

Last summer, I 'indulged' my wife and the HOA and did the yuppie front yard thing. I built her a 25' diameter fern garden complete with a paver border and cement mowing strip. It took about 1,000 pounds of pavers and about the same in cement (mixed from 80 pound bags) along with 4 pickup truck loads of soil and dozens of ferns complete with buried soaker hoses. Then, add a 20' by 3' flower garden made out the same way. That was last summer.

This summer it's my turn. This weekend I built 2 4' by 8' raised beds in my back yard and filled them with a truckload of garden soil. Using square foot gardening, I should be able to get about 64 plants. I've started (most) of the seeds indoors on my sprouting table.
    Here's the planned breakdown:

    4 Amish Paste tomato plants
    4 Homestead tomatio plants
    10 Longhorn Cayenne pepper plants
    10 Purple Longhorn Cayenne plants
    20 Jalapeno plants
10 Black Valentine (bush) bean plants
4 mounds of Zuchinni (2' by 2' per mound)

If this works out, I have enough space for between 4 and 6 more 4' x 8' beds back there. Let's hope the weather cooperates better this summer than the last two.

Nothing in the soil outside yet. I have the seeds in cups on my sprouting table in the basement (grow lights). I won't plant outside until at least mid-April.

Had to keep momma happy first. Paid it forward last summer so I could work the back yard this summer. Also spent last summer 'test planting' several plants around the periphery of the yards to see what would grow where. Big surprise, grew better in the south-facing back yard :D
