  • Homemade Deer Feeders

The Family and I went out yesterday and stopped by Academy down in Macon to grab a couple of things and see what summer stuff was on clearance. First off, in a SHTF scenario that place is toast....because of the neighborHOOD north of there!
My wife knows I have been wanting something to feed and attract the local game to my shooting lanes. The large tripod deer feeders were out front and after she saw the price all I heard was HELL NAW! Maybe one day but the WO budget doesnt get a super fancy uber feeder. ( If it did, I would be getting an AK :) )

So, I bought us all a pair of new galoshes and a few 30lb bags of deer feed.

I have had a spare bucket in my garage and a rod that we used for the paint roller when we moved in.
What luck, there is a plan for a feeder with these ingredients.

I took a 1" wood bit and who knew, there was a perfect circle on the bottom of the bucket for me to pattern.

I board it out another 3/8 of an inch.

I took the dowel rod and put a 3" wood screw threw it. Once I had the hole in the bottom, I put the rod through it. The screw keeps it from falling out.

Add some paracord and a ladder and kaboom, you have a cheap and easy feeder. Once the deer discover it, they nudge the stick and a surprise falls out. I also put a few piles of corn around and near the trail to try and reel em in.

I also heard about putting a jar of peanut butter on a tree with holes cut in the bottom of it. I know a dude who's pawpaw grows peanuts and the deer eat the crap out of them. Enough for them to blast em out of season to keep them out.

I hope these 2 tricks work. I dont make much moolah so I have to be creative on some of my preps and daily items. And if it pays off, I will continue this throughout gun season and into next year. Who knows, I may get a meal or two off of the redneck contraptions!

you can also use some pvc and make a big gravity feeder as well. not to good down here as the bears/hogs will tear them apart. also check your local china mart after season is over..you can pick up feeder motors on clearance. all you do then is get a barrel/bucket cut a 2 inch hole in it,,screw the motor to said bucket,,put batteries in and your ready to rock.
cool idea on the dowl....no go get a cheap game cam to see what visiting it ;)

Yep these don't take more than a little ingenuity and if the deer are already there all you are trying to do is hold them just a little longer
to feed them just a bit more bout 165 grains more:)

you get one of them fancy timer feeders pretty soon you are driving the golf cart to hunt in your camo crocs and thinking you are doing something

Like said above I made some from 4" pvc.

Took a 2 gallon bucket drilled holes in the bottom for drainage set that against a tree, take the pvc an put a cap on one end and use a sawzall to cut a D shape on the other end. Set the pvc in the bucket and strap it to the tree take the cap off and fill with corn. Viola you've got a gravity feeder.

It works too, although squirrels will use it as well.

A friend gave me one similar to that with a motor and timer. He used a 5 gallon paint can for the hopper.
My neighbor across the road has a tripod feeder in his back yard set for dawn and dusk. He shoots the deer from his back porch. To me that's not hunting, it falls into the category of "gettin' groceries."

All the times I've sat over a feeder I've never shot a deer or pig. Heck I've only harvested one off a tree stand all the rest were from stalk /stop etc. LOL
We mostly used them to keep the critters in the AO.
