  • oneida, ky

i just spent a few days in oneida ky at a church school there.

the school takes up most of this town in this daniel boone territory.

a river runs through the school.
they produce their own natural gas.
there is an abandoned coal mine on the property, that still has coal.
    a large cattle operation
    large pig operation
garden plots and lots of corn growing.
i saw lots of goats in the barn and behind fences, and rabbits in pens.
the area seemed to be surrounded by hills..
they get very little snow? i was surprised at that... maybe the hills keep the snow away?
they had dedicated shops for carpentry, mechanics, etc..

the school is private. attracts local kids and international.. these kids work to help offset their school cost.

this is not an ad for the school...
    let me use different words...
a group of folks working to be self sufficient in a mountainous area, off the beaten path... few ways in and few ways out.
    .
my point of the post.. is that this situation had a lot going for it..

do you know of others? if so, tell us the story. berry college in ga. comes to mind.
Working...
