  • Moved out past the Boondocks, now the work begins!

I have been a lil absent lately from the boards here and everywhere.

We finally got our almost dream home. Took 4 months of hell to get here. Moved way way way away from convenience and clutter.

We traded quick trips to the store and work for country living at its finest.

We traded 2800 sq ft for 1300 sq ft. Upgraded from .75 acres to 4 acres.

We traded city sewer and water for artesian wells and septic pumps.

We traded it all, to get what we want. To get where we want.

A lil rundown on the specs.

    3.9 acres
Full hardwood forests, 3 pines on the entire property. Big tall oaks, poplars, beech trees. Wood ferns and what I can call baby bamboo.
We have a stream that feeds into a neighbors pond. Our well overflow also forms a stream that connects to the creek.
    Swimming pool with deck.
    Detached garage.
    4 springs.
Big back porch that wraps around.
No internet out here. Had to get a Verizon card to make life more normal feeling...lol

I have so much work to do its insane. We have completely remodeled the inside. New carpet, new tile, new paint. Going with the country decor style. (Whatever makes her happy right?)
I have too much yard work. Gotta get the garden going. Didnt want to start late this year so I have a few months to get the soil amended before fall/winter crops.
Soil is dark black with splotches of sandy loam.

I did plant about 50 potatoes in some boxes.
Got a couple of maters going, transplanted from the pots.
1 blueberry bush that I have had in a pot for 3 years.

We have major plans for the property.

12-15 fruit trees----- doing research now on surrounding trees and how they will affect growth------ cant plant apples near black walnut tree
1500 sq ft of corn----gotta figure out how to keep the deer out---processor is 2 miles away though :)
2500 sq ft garden----- looking to build fence and gate around it. Acquired many tools during this period to make the job easier---gotta get a chainsaw and a tiller to complete my collection, the soil is soft enough for manual till, just time consuming.
200 sq ft herb garden-------for seasonings and medicinal
Build a campsite for the kids---property backs up to backside of a mountain, want to make it look like NorthGA campsite on creek
Gather all the rocks for super fire pit--- we have great rocks out here scattered about.
Find more arrowheads and artifacts---see pic
Want to get into animals next year-------chickens may be first, egg layers for practice then fry em up
Homeowner left a work bench, some various tools, irrigation system, nice gerber multitool and a pressure washer that look like it was done for...fixed that right quick!

One of the hardest things is working 55-60 hours a week, raising 2 young sons, being a honey do doer and have time for myself while I try to squeeze in time for the property.
    Whoever said this was easy.......................

But we have some nice scenery for the ride home. Attached a pic of the hills we live in. Thats the dirt road 1 mile behind me. We live over that first ridge

Beautiful place WO! Yeah, it's lots of work being your own water department, sewer and sanitation engineer and road crew. If you like working with your hands and doing things for yourself you will love country living.

I gotta get one of my buddies down here that knows trees. I think I have a couple of black walnut trees. Hear their wood is very expensive
I will post a pic of the nuts to see if any of y'all can recognize
Went through 2 tanks on the weedeater today and only got 1/8 cleared.
            Need a bobcat
Or some fire and a hose

I am ready to learn about the pros and cons of some of the trees and shrubs out here
Ya know, ole mawmaw remedy stuff
Heard sweet gums and beech trees were nice to have.

                wise owl,
                i love it...
i was raised north of 'lanta.
i think you've moved north of my old stompings.
                --
                sweet gum!!
my dad told me to go dig up a tree and plant it near the house in the front yard.
i didn't want a little tree. so me, and a shovel and a pick went to work on a tree in the pasture... dug a trench about 5' from the tree so i could get all the roots.
dad couldn't understand why the project was taking so long...
oh yeah... we had rocks too!
any how, when he finally came to see the tree i had chosen... he about choked..
i didn't know sweet gums were undesirable to dad. i think you know middle ga.
an uncle used to dairy in henry co on land that is now the interstate. when he came by and saw the sweet gum that we had moved to the front yard, he had some nasty comments... he'd been killing sweet gum trees for years.
                sorry for the tale.
                back to the congrats.
i love the view... the part that got my attention are the wells/springs!! valuable.

a tip of the ole straw hat!

Way to go, Wise Owl! Up here we use solar electric fences to keep the deer out of our gardens. They aren't very expensive and really work. Use three wires because they will crawl under them.

Black walnuts are good for keeping tree rats around, somewhat okay for eating (never liked the taste myself) and horrible on lawnmower blades lol

RR--- looks like north of Mecca but we aren't
This is the last range of the Appalachians living on the piedmont
We are 60 miles south of the big city.
Small town. County only has 2 red lights.

I have red clay in the front yard so I can't escape it entirely
I was very surprised at the back yard soil.

Found some massive rocks today. About 5 of em. Wish I had some mules to drag em out. Want to make them seats for my firepit

One thing I really want to do is meet my neighbors.
Met one so far. I know he is down with gardening and guns. Funny how short conversation reveals that much
There are lots of cows and chickens out here.
                          A catfish pond too.

Gotta buddy 2 miles from me. Small world. Gonna hunt that land. Gonna hunt mine too
