  • Treadle

A while back we were gifted, by my Mom, a fully functional treadle machine. I need to rework the top that has water damage from where plants were kept but it sure is nice.

Sweet! We found one at an antiques place up north one time and it rode in the back of the truck from there on home. We need a belt for it. I heard of a place near Gainesville, FL that fixed these sorts of things but I can't remember the name of it.

Yeah, let's see what is inside, the cabinet is just a cabinet... The real jewel is the machine. Parts are also on eBay...

I bought an old Singer 66 of eBay back when I first started to do nylon gear mods as it is a solid steel machine, no plastic, and fixed it up by lubing it up, as that is all it needed. It did OK on nylon, except when it got to multiple layers, then the thread tension didn't have the umph to pull the thread up into the stitch. The machine had the power and strength, it just didn't have the ability to pull the thread up into heavy nylon... It was built for quilting and dress making, not 1/4" thick nylon... LOL! But it was a good machine... If it did reverse stitches I would have kept it, but not being able to reverse, forcing me to spin the nylon project got old quick...

Now I have a Consew walking-foot industrial machine and a Necchi SuperNova for the small stuff... A tough, vintage Italian machine that does reverse and zigzag... Between the both, I can make almost anything nylon I need or want...

We have one that needed a belt. We have Amish friends that use treadle machines and we bought a belt from them, so if ya know any Amish.....

My daughter got it to work somwhat but the needle won't catch the bottom thread. Probably something simple.

Yep, looks like a Singer 66 "Red Eye" model... Just like mine I used to own. But sadly yours has a lot of finish wear, especially on the arm area from being raised and lowered into the cabinet for who knows how many times over the years. It also does not have a reverse stitch, just straight lockstitch... If it turns smoothly, it might just need a good cleaning and lube to get it back working. Maybe an adjustment, but most are tough as tanks. Yours, in the shape it is, will not sell for much, nor will the cabinet, as it too looks and sounds like it needs refinishing work. Best option is to USE IT as is, if you find it intriguing, otherwise pass it along to one who might enjoy that method of sewing... Wish I could tell you it was a treasure of high value, but with that wear, it is not... You can also part it out and sell on eBay. You have a complete machine there and many parts are highly sought after. Even the bobbin winder is there...

Thanks for posting the link Kappydell it looks like there is lots of good info there. I have a 1907 Singer that needs some work. I have purchased lots of feet and bobbins for it, but still need to get it cleaned up and working.
