  • If You are Going to Have Animals at you BOL What are You Doing to Insure THEIR Water

I've given this topic much thought and have to admit I've Never seen anyone on any site mention how they are preparing to
treat, filter or store water for their animals. Animals that will be a critical part of your food survival and perhaps your ability to
grow food w/o tractors....... They may even become an essential form of transportation.

So how are you going to keep them Healthy if you don't have a water plan for them?
Have you ever thought about how much water it takes for a lactating cow or goat to make that milk/butter/cheese? Plus,
Chickens do you know how much water they will drink on a cold Winter day, never mind the heat of Summer.

If the well water or city water is not safe for you to drink those animals will be toast without filtered water as well.

Today in going through some files I ran across a 4-stared site that always has some great ideas because they are: http://www.Engineeringforchange.org They have everything from an
interesting "washing machine" I would want to tweak it for larger loads but it was interesting, as was the 2 man "manpowered
    Sorghum press.

But the important parts -- the water parts were in the archives like the "Packed particle bed filters" and "Slow Sand Water Filtration"
and the "ceramic/clay water filters" that are good for about 2+ YEARS plus it can be homemade with MINIMAL equipment and
skill plus they have figured out a way to introduce silver into to stop bacterial build up. (They use colloidal silver after the first
drying and before it is fired.) They are "Engineers without Boarders" and all the HOW TO stuff is right there - free.

See, I have to admit at the cost $$$$$ of those Berkey and other Filters I'm seriously going to be using one or even two of these
methods for my four-legged and feathered crew.

Guess I'll be able to keep those extra filters, I originally bought for the DIY system for the animals, for myself .

    Hope this helps someone else.

We don't have city water. If the rain water collected, creek water, and well water are all contaminated then them cows are steaks. Chances are if the contamination is that bad the live stock will also be ingesting it in their forage and there's not much that can be done to save them.

      Rain water and ceramic filters:

We have horses, chickens, dogs, and here in the near future some sheep. Water for the animals is a big concern.

I'm not really sure what kind of contamination could affect a well that would make the water non-potable to the critters, but would also be able to be filtered. Some form of nuclear waste or chemical contamination could make it unfit to drink. I don't see how that would be something that could be filtered though.

SeldomSeenSlim====> You need to think a little deeper:
Farm chemicals (not necessarily from YOUR farm), fertilizers, mineral leaching, oil contamination from surface sources or fracking activities, pharmacuticles (spelling sucks tonight), nitrogen, phosphates, mining waste, biologicals, bodily wastes.........

Now, add intentional actions like deliberate introductions of bacteria, poisonous plant material, animal or human remains - think the wars during the age of the Black Death .... Storm water and Industrial waste over flow. Ever look at the things mostly removed by those PUR tap filters?

Water tables and reservoirs are generally large and you can easily be impacted by actions Many miles away.

I have learned that anytime I say "No Way!" or "I just don't see it" these are trigger phrases forcing me to do my homework.

Just saying, too much rides on the health of your livestock, large or small..... to assume they can or will drink just any water.

I have three wells on the property pretty much spread apart and two are deep one shallow hand pump.
I also have multi thousands of gallons of rainwater catchment that my animals get to drink right now. All shelters have tanks and rain gutters on them. All rainwater is caught for storage and used regularly. Thats what I do for now.
