  • SOP for front gate.

This is a shout out to all you operators, fast movers and wanabe's. I have been tasked to generate some SOP's for our groups front gate. This will include when to engage (talk) people, and what to say and how to say it. It should also include when to call for a reinforcement and what to say in a report back to the "house". Basically I need a general SOP for gate guard. I do not know what one should look like or what it should entail. Any help getting started would be much appreciated. If anyone has an SOP that I could copy the format and then modify, that would be great also. If you have been on the boards a while and have some suggestions you can PM me and I will give out more details.

    Thanks

I've got some stuff that I'll try to pass along. Give me some time to put some thoughts together.

Just a couple of quick thoughts.
First have a set time limits that if you do not report back within, then help is automatically sent.
Have a hand signal that means all clear, such as raising your hat from your head & putting it back on. Also one that means alert. Ideally gestures that are meanenless to others.
Along with the handsignals are duress codewords that can be sent over the radio.

make sure everyone understands what they can an can't offer to outsiders.

That's all until the morning coffee kicks in.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

          ibetiny,
Is your gate on a public road where you might expect normal traffic going by, or isolated where if someone shows up you know they are there to see you or up to no good?

Gate is on a public road. house and buildings are not visible from road. Gate is strong metal gate common to farms around here. There is a turnaround between the road and the gate. Anyone touching the gate will have had to have moved 20 feet or so from the road. The guard position will be hidden from view of the road and that side of gate. Overwatch can be manned within a couple of minutes, but will not be staffed 24\7. Reinforcement should be coming on foot within 3 to 4 minutes of alarm.

well 3-4 mins is a long time.....
ever consider layers to help funnel intruders..think of letting them pass ,giving time for an ambush at a choke point,,,,my 2 seconds of waking early advice lol

when i was in shape i could cover half a mile in the time frame on foot easily..

If help is 3-4 minutes away, how close is your residence to the gate and or what can you do to cut response time? Bullets travel awfully fast..

Any chance of setting up cameras to vies the gate. Or other method of remote observation? Can you set-up a driveway alarm if someone comes of the road, just before the gate?

Just remember to not just focus on the gate. If that is your obvious strong point you may be attacked somewhere else. Also, the camera idea by EX121 is good and you can use and old used camcorder so it will be cheap. When It hits the fan you should add a way of slowing any foot advance by the outsiders until your back-up can arrive. This is all I can think of at he moment. I just woke up as I did not get home until 3 this morning.

tarheelsman got me to remeber a post somewhere about planting hedges & other plants to deter entry. something with lots of prickly points. But it could also provide concealment.

Everything is a weighted option when it comes to things like this. Plant shrubs and bushes to keep folks out, takes away from your field of fire and observation. You have to find the right balance in that situation and make sure the natural vegetation is channeling intruders into areas where you want them. But overall, nobody wants to crawl through a bunch of thorny bushes to a house.

Everything in this situation is a trade off.

Ideally you dont want them so close they can get to your gate.
If you are having to guard your gate with an armed guard then the poop has hit the fan. In that case I would setup a perimeter much further out up and down the road. You don't want the bad guys to be able to drive up to your gate or house. Multiple perimeters should be maintained and the closer in to the protected house the more difficult the perimeter should be to breach.
                            Just my two cents worth.

Maybe 1 or more loud dogs that bark when someone that shouldn't be there is there.

Just a personal view but the dog should be big enough to put a saddle on them, then you got a real dog. LOL
