  • WILL's been busy...

Well last weekend, I picked up these two cast iron skillets for $5 total at a yard sale. They were in rough shape. I wire wheeled and washed 'em. Then I coated them with oil and baked them for 3 hours at 250 degrees to "season" them. They came out great.

I picked up some cucumbers at the flea market last weekend, 4 for a dollar. I pickled them into three full mason jars. So that's three jars of pickles for about $1.50 including spices, etc. I googled how to do it and it was brick simple. Going off memory. Add a cup of vinegar, 1 tbsp salt, 3 minced garlic cloves, some pepper balls and dill to the jar. Push it full of pickles, sliced or whole. Top it off with water and cap it for a few weeks in the frig. Done....

Today, I went to Wally-World and pulled the trigger on an outdoors cooking cast oven. I've been lusting after one for a while, but couldn't locate one at the flea markets. Set me back about $70 including the lid pull. Anyhow, glad to have it. Now I need to learn how to use it and practice…or my wife does that is…..

Does the Sam Adams cook well in cast iron lol?

nothing better in the world than some good beef stew that's been simmering for the better part of the day in a Dutch oven. Want something else to try? Look up the recipe for dump cake.

nice product placement good ole Sam Adams. I do like using the cast iron, although I've had my share of oops moments. Like when I pull it off the coals and forget how hot it is and try to take the lid off 2 minutes later.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I keep telling the wife to pull the trigger on the dutch oven but those jokers are high! Maybe Santa may bring me one.
You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

I actually stocked up on the Octoberfest too. It's yummy and they only make it for a short while every year. I'll check out the dump cake, thx.

Back in the long long ago, in the before before time.... The Lodge store in TN where they are made USED to have "seconds" relatively cheap. That was when it was just a small shop, couple of bumpkins working there, aisles were unorganized, place was kinda dirty, etc. But you could get a "second" of a 12" oven (actual oven not just a pot, their is a difference) for sometimes as low as $20. We would stop every time we went through that way. Then after a while, some changed the store, cleaned things up a bit, made it more appealing to yuppies and prices went up. "Seconds" were still there but you kinda felt like you were a POS just asking for them. And the "seconds" were just a couple bucks cheaper than the regular stuff :(

Thankfully we bought a bunch when the 2nds were cheaper.

The knockoff brand from China at Walmart works fine also, I've seen more than a few of them in the fire at campouts and never seen a problem with them.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"
