  • power was out

we haven't had "no power" in a couple of years.

yesterday we had big rain/wind/lightning. we needed the rain real bad.. thank you Lord.

suddenly the lights went out. i had recently bought a generator for the house. (then, before it got off the trailer, it went to a Christian organization... that's another story.)
huge tree had blown over the road and took out all power lines.
the biggee power company truck pulled up and a fellow got out with a lot of confidence and show,
worked his bucket lift and then started acting nervous.
i was standing in the rain talking to the sheriffs deputy.
the power company employee... (i think he was an obama supporter) had told sheriffs dep. that he would have it fixed in an hour. that time prediction sounded like bull hockey to me judging from tree in road, all the lines down. lines pulled down in the connecting set of poles too.

the biggee power co man got in truck after much agitation (which was obvious... his initial swagger had disappeared ... my opinion... he didn't have a clue ) and drove off.

about 2 hours later 3 large trucks from an independent contractor came up and 2.5 hours later power was restored.

    lessons learned
i need to go find another generator (i was about to hook up a small one i have for the ref/freezer)
    and get it "wired in"
local biggee power company has hired too many "unqualified" and untrained employees.
this was not a huge storm. damage was not widespread.
i need to have lanterns, candles, etc.. more accessible. and i need more of them.

solar system with charged batteries would have been nice!

it doesn't take much of a storm to put us "in the dark"

This is true. I guess the power goes out here so often that we know to stock up on things like lamps and candles (at least at my house). I don't have a generator...YET...but it is on the list of things to buy with next years tax return. We have been a couple days without power though, without too much stress so I don't think it would be a big issue unless the outage lasted longer than 3 days. The good thing about power outages is that they help you really prepare. Electricity is the worst crutch on society but we love it.
