Hazelnut Trees?

Ok we spent the last week at our BOL and I had 9 Hazelnut Tree seedlings that I got from my county SWCD for cheap and I planted them in two rows 15' apart.

Anyone ever grow them?

I've seen them growing wild but seldom get nuts from them because of squirrels.

Yes we grow a few. And Oregon is the lead producer of Hazel nuts. They can be grown as a bush like they do in the wild, or as a tree which is how they are grown in orchards out here. Your spacing is probably fine, but it will take quite a few years for them to fill the gaps.

As far as squirrels I think your only hope is to grow enough for them and you. We have probably about 10 trees that are about 10' and the squirrels seem to get most of the nuts. So last winter I planted 40 more. In 5 or so years I will know if that plan is going to work.

I wish you success, but from my tree planting experiences with "whips" (small started trees) they need regular watering to get established and they definitely need some sort of protection from nibbling deer or they will be eaten right down to the ground, being so young and tender.

Maybe better luck in a fenced area where you can control the deer and keep the squirrels happy with a feeder full of peanuts, sunflower seeds and apple slices.

I have the bush form the conservation ones are very small nuts about like a kernal of field corn. The hybrid varities are much larger 3/4 in nut.

Do they do well in heat and/or dry conditions?
Have you ever ground them up for coffee?

Justified, They don't seem to like hot and dry. The leaves yellow and they will drop some as they dry out. Alot like my black walnuts. I haven't had enough nuts for adding to coffee yet but one of these years hopefully... :o)

I suspected as much PerryJeff. I may try some once we get settled in the new home(new to us). We've got several spots where there is diffused sunlight and plenty of water to keep the roots cool.

Black Walnut coffee! Wonder what that would taste like?
