I had my best luck in a partial shaded area that had a good deep afternoon sun. It allowed the water to stay longer thru the night (when it was applied) and morning without evaporation. It also kept it from burning up during the hot months. I've always done rows. Racoons plagued mine, dunno what kind critters you have to watch out for but lots of things like corn so protect it well.

My mom would plant pumpkins or other squash vines around her corn to help keep the racoons out, evidently they don't like the prickly vines.

Just realize it will NOT taste like the "enhanced" hybrid sweet corn you are used to buying from the stores. Not nearly as sweet tasting, more corn flavor and a VERY short time from prime sweetness to mealy flavor on the stalk.

Thanks Matt, mainly the birds we had to watch out for, seems to have been a bit of an upsurge in pest species over the last few years, a lot of people reckon that’s down to the rising cost of shotgun cartridges. Certainly a lot of magpies and wood pigeons about, there was one down there the other day, thought it might pull a few up but seems to have left them alone.

Ah yeah read about the flavour issue, planted quite a bit so have to keep an eye out when the ears start to ripen and get it in the freezer asap.
