  • Zero Landscaping

I don't know if this has been talked about but if, and when, the shtf most will not have fuel for mowing and weedeating their lawns. Once we sell our home and get settled into a new place, working toward zero landscaping will be something we will start immediately. There are many perrenial plants you can use that will take over your grass over time and, once mature, will require no maintenance. These plants will eventually block any traditional grasses and weeds from coming up.

Here are some that I've used and enjoyed:
-Buffalo Grass. Loves the sun and is drought tolerant. It's been genetically modified over the years, now comes in various colors and only grows to about 6" tall.
-Mexican Feather Grass. Will do ok in shade but loves the sun and is drought tolerant. It's an ornamental grass that grows to about 18" tall and is a beatiful golden/green color. It spreads like wildfire once it's in the ground. I've seen cheap seed packets on Amazon(I think they're around $5.00 per 1,000).
-Vinca Vine. Once established requires little water and is perfect for planting under trees where other grasses will not do well. It won't venture out much past the shade of the trees.
-Monkey Grass. It's often used as a border plant but spreads at a moderate pace and is fairly drought tolerant once established. It does well in sun but best in shade. This is one you can divide anually and sprig to promote spreading quicker.

If you're looking for ground cover for your flower and/or vegetable gardens, seedum is a great cover(best I've found so far)that spreads fairly fast and keeps most of the grass and weeds from coming up once it's mature, but it won't block perrenials from coming back every year.

There are other plants but this gives you an idea of something you might consider so your yards aren't overun by grass and out of control weeds when there is no way to maintain them. Even now, zero landscaping is a nice thing to think about. Less mowing and weedeating and more time for prepping!....including gardening.

    We discussed it here https://www.survivalandpreparednessf...hp?1634-Mowing
but I like your idea of controlling with other plant life, very interesting

Except for gardens and walkways, I'm a survival of the fittest type of landscaper. I never did see the point in killing weeds that will grow of their own free will to replace with something else that doesn't want to grow at all. At least when it's just for looking at. Lavender, sage and devil's claw grow natural out here and I've transplanted some of that around the house, but I don't do anything special to help them along.

That's the beauty of plants like yours Seldom. They are incredibly hardy and given the chance will self seed and spread on their own over time. Lot's of great varieties of Lavender and sage. I'm partial to Russian Sage myself.

We're still looking at properties and are hoping to find something that has a small yard with the balance in timber. There are two like that on our list so far. It would make it easy to zero landscape with the balance of open ground in gardens, both ornamental and vegetable.

I have thought about planting wild blackberry bushes. Food and protection.

Good idea boltgun. Plant as many fruit trees and bushes as you can as well as vegetables. The sooner the better as it will take a few years for some of these to start bearing fruit.
There are several sites that will list what grows well in your area. Here are a couple to get you started:
A List of Alabama Fruit Trees. Planting fruit trees on your Alabama property isn't a difficult task, even for the novice planter. Several trees bear fruit and flourish in the humid, desirable climate Alabama offers. Alabama has a varying climate and falls into the USDA plant hardiness zones 7 through 9. The moist air and humus-rich soil of the state makes planting several varieties of fruit tree achievable.

Some of those trees will do better if you plant a couple of the same breed for cross pollenization.

You could use those in place of barbed wire for your perimeter! LOL
