storing food for the rabbits

I have gotten 7 rabbits , 5F 2M and I am wonder how many of you are storing food for them. I am looking to put up about a years worth of food. I was thinking about putting the bags of pellets onto the mylar bags and oxygen absorbers and putting them in a 55gal barrel. What do you think? What do you feed yours.

We dont waste the mylar on feeds. We use 55 gallon plastic with rubber sealed clamp lids. most of the feed is alfalfa and will store very well without the bag and absorbers. keep in cool dry area. If you have the outdoor space and decent soil - growing grasses and alfalfa/clover is easy. added a little cattle mineral with some chicken scratch feed and you have a complete rabbit chow. you can add a tiny bit of blackstrap at feeding time to increase pallatability and give the bunnies a sweet treat.
Make sure the grasses - clover/alfalfa is dry before you store it. If you just buy a few bales of good high quality hay containing a 50-50 mix of Grass and Alfalfa or Clover you can avoid the growing aspect.

I was thinking about trying to grow swiss chard to supplement the rabbit food. It grows year 'round in a hoop here in NWA. Or with a winter like we had this year, even that might not be needed.

We store our feed in metal trash cans, because of the varmints. For longevity sealed container is a must.

I will have to try BioG8r's recipe for rabbit food, sounds promising.

Gotta be careful with alfalfa pellets. Given a little heat and moisture, you'll have a nice crop of mold - and worthless feed. Sealing and O2 absorber might just work.

getting the kids a bunny so I will be trying some things out with storing rabbit feed as well as learning about what i can grow.
