    --
we obtained a garden last year that we did not start
there were huge asparagus plants that i mowed down at the end of the year.
    --
    they are coming back!!
yahoo. i like this kind of crop.
we didn't do anything except mow them down with a rotary mower.
    probably about 3 inches high.

now i hope that some kind folks will tell us how to get them started!

Hello RR, I put in 500 asparagus crowns 3 yrs. ago. 250 Purple and 250 Jersey knights. Basically dig deep to plant them go down a foot to 15 inches the rhizomes will go up and sideways but not down that is why you want to go deep. 2 years ago the purple was far sweeter tasting and I loved them. Last year they tasted about the same to me. If you have the space put lots in the crowns are cheap and 20 plus years of good crop then they say you should rejuvenate them because they start crowding out. I bought mine from Krohne's it is $20 for 25 or $80 for 250... Allot of digging once but then I will even cut some new shoots into august to make a meal once the bed is established.

Just don't mow thhose ferns down until after they turn brown and are dead. The roots need those green fronds to build up food storage for next year's crop of spears. Mowing when green = no asparagus!!

After about 6 weeks of cutting you will need to STOP cutting and let those spears grow to fern so the roots will be fed for next's years production.

                  folks,
we are late dealing with the garden because of some conflicts.

anyhow, the asparagus is back and growing like crazy...
i was doing my job as chief weed eradicator engineer, and the wife walked up with a spear? of asparagus she'd cut..
crisp and pretty good... actually had a nutty type flavor.

all i did was drive the tractor over the top of the asparagus area, getting in and out of the garden... it's a tough little plant.

again, plant it one time and it'll come back year after year.. talk about a preparedness person's dream veggie

Yep. Asparagus will keep coming back year after year. Start out harvesting it for just a week or two and increase the harvest period by one more week each year. After a few years you will have a well established asparagus bed. I can pretty much keep harvesting mine until we get tired of eating it. I've been giving some away because we can't eat it all. I think i will try pickling some of it this year to see if I can preserve it.

Try tossing them in a little olive oil and salt and then grilling or broiling with high heat for a few minutes. That's something special. I like a little balsamic vinegar on mine too.

Ours are in their second year. Nothing I can harvest yet so I'm still buying them at the grocery store. :(

                        thanks mote,
we'll be trying that... i've already relayed the formuly to the chief cook.
just to make sure... i'm guessing you put the balsamic vinegar on them
after they are cooked with olive oil... right?

Yes, wait until they are cooked for the balsamic. Otherwise the sugars will get scorched and that just tastes bad.

we are already gathering and eating asparagus.

                            folks,
I've got plans to buy a few of those cans of dh and/or fd food, but to have some green stuff grow up for free
(courtesy of God) is awesome and in the event there are problems... would be extra welcome!

Put in a bed two years ago and add more every year. Love that it comes back on its own. Also have Romain that reseeds itself and comes back. My Little Guy (6), will pick it and eat it right in the yard. Try covering with Olive oil and Garlic powder then bake in oven or dutch oven it great.
