  • Goat help!

We have been raising goats for or dairy needs for a few years now. Up until this point they have all birthed without any type of complications. Yesterday morning our LaManche/nubian cross give birth to a buck and doe. The doe seems to be doing quite well but the buck is extremely lethargic, won't get up and move around or nurse. He mostly just lays in one spot. Momma is not doing to hot either. She is very weak and seems disoriented at times. I tried milking her so that I can feed the buck with a 60cc cath tip syringe. Normally we let the kids nurse freely on the mother for a few days before we seperate them. Instead of milk or colostrom coming out of her teets, a very thick heavy cream comes out about the consistency of chees whiz.

I've searched around on the net but haven't turned up much in the way of useful info. If anybody has any experience or advice they could share I would certainly appreciate it.

Been out of goat tending for well over 20 years now, but have you had any mold in the feed? We had a similar issue (Toggenberg/Nubian cross) and IIRC getting the doe fresh grain/molasses and continuing to milk her (to help prevent mastitis) - she was back to normal in a few days. Went on to several freshenings afterward.

Was the birthing any more difficult than witnessed in the past from this doe? Excessive stress could have caused and edema in the udder, but that usually won't affect all quarters...perhaps one or two. Could explain the buck's lethargy if he was a difficult birth.

HTH, but like I said, it's been a few years...

Call your vet. NOW. She may have milk fever. It is completely treatable, but it can kill her.
