I have found those old-fashioned metal wash tubs do real well as planters for taters and squash and carrots and onions. Cheap at auctions and junk stores cause they usually have holes in the bottoms which is perfect for water drainage anyway! They work great for mints also - keeps them from getting away in the garden.

Just harvested the last of my container baby carrots today, gonna throw them in the next pot of deer stew. They managed to survive the hard dry summer
