  • Ordered my garden seeds today!!!

I am so excited, as I placed my garden seed order today. I ordered all heirloom seeds and will start them indoors as soon as I can. I ordered carrots, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes (3 types), cauliflower, beets, brussel sprouts, onions, turnips, and some herbs.

I also ordered some Goji Berry Plants. While visiting my parents recently I was looking through one of my Dad's seed catalogs and noticed that they were selling Goji Berry plants and it really got my interest. I am not sure if you have heard of them or seen the dried berries in the store, but they are very very expensive. So after reading about them in the seed catalog and a little research on the internet I decided to give them a try. If what I have read is correct, they should be an easy plant to grow once it is established. And I mean easy in the sense that they are low maintenance. So we shall see. The other thing that is interesting to me from a prepping stand point is that Goji berries are highly nutritious and the plants are supposed to be very prolific producers, so if true, would make them ideal in a PAW situation, at least that is what I am hoping.

I also wanted to let you know that I received my Green Tea plant seeds. For those of you who read my post on this awhile back, I decided to place an order. I ordered plants, but they also include seeds in your order. So far, I have received the seed portion of my order and will be starting them soon. I will update my Green Tea thread for those interested....

Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement in getting my garden seed order in.

    Cheers,
    SC

The Tea sounds very interesting I am curious what you think of the process. I really don't drink much tea. I have seen the Goji in the catalogs and thought about it so keep us informed. It sounds like a bigger berry with extra traits than Highbush Cranberry

I had to look up the Highbush Cranberry as I have not heard of it before. It sounds very interesting and might be worth picking up a couple of plants just to give them a try. Evidently, if you want berries you need to have two plants as they are cross pollinating. In my mind, even if you do not utilize the fruits from the Highbush Cranberry or Goji plants I think they would be invaluable to have in a PAW situation due to their high nutrient content.

As for the green tea project I will definitely be taking pictures and posting updates as I go along. Just today I started soaking the seeds and tomorrow I will plant them and put them under a grow light to (hopefully) germinate in the next 60 - 90 days.

Edited to add: It will be interesting to see just how many seeds actually germinate since I have read that there is a high failure rate with seed germination. So out of the 12 seeds that I have I might be lucky to get 4 plants. But we shall see. :-)

SC one of the supposed new super plants for health is Aronia Berries at least I seem to be hearing that alot in my Area. I put 25 Viking Var. bushes in last spring in along my property border. I pulled alot of the old fence out but left the posts in and keep putting different fruiting plants in as border hedges. This year I am putting grapes and currents, josta berries in. I have never been around currents but love goose berries.
Some of those high failure rate seeds I have filed the edge if it has a hard shell so it lets water in. Also I will soak in water for 1-2 days before planting. So if some of those seeds that don't germ you might want to try those tricks... good luck. Jeff

Just so you know, seeds do NOT need any light in order to germnate, just moisture and warmth. Once they break the soil surface THEN they need light to keep developing.

PerryJeff, thanks for the info on the Aronia Berries, I will have to look into them. As for my tea seeds, I have one that has germinated and is about an inch tall with 3 tiny leaves on it, I noticed a few of the others that are are planted the seeds have split. I carefully pulled one out of the dirt to see what was happening and it had a tap root about an 1.5 inches long, I was quite surprised. I am going to replant the seeds into bigger pots so that they have more room to do their thing. If I have a few that end up doing nothing I will try your suggestions of soaking them a little longer.

Goatlady, thank you for educating me on the fact that seeds do not need light to germinate. As you can see, I have a lot to learn about gardening.

Put my cold weather veggies seeds in the garden two days ago... Earlier this year due to the unusually warm winter so far. I hope we don't get a late season snow dump that kills off all my soon to be emerging sprouts... Have the tomato seeds inside for transplant later...
