Yep, cats are wanton wildlife destroyers. A number of years ago a newly retired couple from the city moved in down the road. Woman had cats and let them roam free. Within 6 months there were no more wild quail in my woodlot. Bobwhite quail is dissapearing rapidly throughout the south to begin with, they don't need any extra help. She has no more cats, by the way, coyotes must have gotten them.:)
Raccoons seem to be the big rabies carriers around here, followed to a lesser degree by fox. I always, and I mean always, have at least a handgun on my hip whenever I'm outside the house, and usually a shotgun nearby as well. A rabid raccoon could wander out of the woods at any time of the day.
All our dogs are vaccinated, as well as our horses.
And of our 6 dogs, one came from the pound, several were dumped, two were roadside pickups. All are rescue dogs.
And for the person a few posts above, regarding the cat keeping mice and snakes under control, the snakes alone will do the job on rodents. There is a black racer that hangs around our back pasture, and a corn snake that hangs around the stables, we don't bother them and they don't bother us. But they look fat and happy! Heck, I won't even shoot a rattler as long as it stays in the woods where it belongs.
