  • This seems cool

I have been looking around all over the place for land to buy, in order to get a BOL established, and eventually turn it into a homestead. There was a place in Arkansas I was interested in, but someone beet me to the particular one I was considering, so now I'm looking everywhere. Anyway, I came across this community and thought it sounded pretty cool. I don't know if there are more, but it seems like a nice idea for many different places, as a foundation of sorts, for survival minded folks.
Thought some of you might like to check it out. Also, does anyone have any input about Washington state as far as a BOL or homestead? Pros and cons of living around that area? I haven't really thought of the west coast at all before, but it sure is pretty, and makes me wonder. Alaska even, although that would be pretty much falling off the grid I suppose. I've always thought near home in Florida, north Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, or maybe the carolinas. Any input would be appreciated.

Skyomish is on the West side of the mountains or the wet side. I t gets lots of rain and a lot of people from Seattle & Everet are moving north. I'll look at the web site more closely but my initial impression was more 'new ageish" than individaul BOL type.
If I was moving to Wa instead of living here I would look in the Methow Valley (may be to crowded) , or Okonogon County, near Tonasket or the northeast portion near Kettle Falls or Colville. Land is cheap.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Look at the details, you are buying into an agricultural commune. Each parcel is 40 acres but 35 of it has an agricultural easement, meaning you cannot develop it in any way. Also, the buy-in for this place is $250,000 for that 40 acres (actually 5 acres that you can develop)!!!!. You can start building whenever you choose after purchasing ther land but you have to have the exterior finished within one year and they have requirements on roofing and paint colors you can use.

A little too regimented if you ask me.

Yeah, the initial concept of only a few folks around a bunch of farm land seems cool. However, it does seem like it's probably pretty regimented. Plus, it seems it might be just a bit to liberal. I think it would be cool for a survival minded group to have something similar, and self sustaining, but I wonder about this. It is a lot of money too. I think it is beautiful over that way, but I wonder about everything else, including the troubles of being around a bunch of liberals. Don't know how true it is that there are a bunch of liberals over there, but that is what I'm hearing. Thanks for the responses.

If it was a real survival group, it wouldn't be advertised. More than likely neo hippies. I've met some folks that call themselves "hippies" and honestly, some of them were much more conservative minded than most quote survivalists unquote that I've met over the years.

$50K an acre is more than a little ridiculous.

Their is all sorts of land scams that have went around in the 25 years I've been involved in this, including Bo Gritz famous land scam of "Almost Heaven" which turned out to be money pit hell for the idjits foolish enough to put bucks in Bo's pocket.

I agree with dim tim, look elsewhere. I get the impression that the land is going to be heavily regulated by the hippie home owners association Nazis. (HHOAN) No heavy duty trucks (poor gas mileage), no air conditioning, (not eco friendly) looks like the plans have to come from or be approved by the architect.

I think you folks are right. At first, it seemed cool, because wishful thinking filled in all the unknowns. However, it probably is nothing like the way I would hope for it to be. And then considering the price vs what you actually own, it is very high dollar. If s group of survivalists get together and came up with a way to be neighbors, thereby securing a large piece of land, and somehow being able to make a living from what they produced on, that would be great, because in a SHTF scenario, they could be self sufficient, with plenty to barter with. I think you folks' impression is probably the right one though. Too much rules, trouble, liberals, and too little real return on investment. Anyway, thanks for the input everyone. I'll be going to Tennessee in a couple weeks to look around up there.

My advice is to go East in Tennessee. I live in West TN. and would love to move a little (OK a lot) to the East (starting at about the Tennessee River/ middle of the state) in this state. Being so close to the MS. River there is a large population of misfits that do not have any good intentions. Or plans of becoming productive. I feel really bad for the good folks that are stuck closer to the Big city then I am. With that being said, I won't be in much better shape if I don't get another location to bug out to as well. But MONEY wins, in the end.

Besides the farther East you go the more water and mountains you will find. Don't get me wrong, you can dig a hole and it will fill up with water here. But I'm sure you would rather have moving water to work with.

TyrannyUnleashed - thanks for the advice. I'll be in Nashville, and was going up north east of that to look at some land I saw online. Don't really know anything about that area. I have been up to Bristol a few times, and areas around there also, and I really like that. It was beautiful, with the water and mountains. That is an area I definitely plan to spend more time checking out. But for now, I just figured, I'll already be in Nashville, so I might as well look at the stuff I saw north of that. Do you have any thoughts on those areas? I assume Bristol is probably more of what you mean by going east. Thanks again.

Not for me either. After being in an HOA I can tell you, I do not want anyone telling me what I can or cannot do with my land that we have paid for with our hard earned money. Plus, you have no idea or choice as to what kind of people you are getting mixed up with. It is definitely not for me.
