I prefer the batt type for the reason if you ever have a problem had to take down part of the ceiling (or run wiring, or fix a leak or what ever), you will have a tuff time in clean up from the blown in type where as the batts can be rolled back up and reused easier.

I don't think it is overkill at all. I would do it and as said above, any barrier you can put in do so. The cost will be reflected in your power consumption drop.

i meant to mention too that typically one can a company come in and install the batts for about the same price as you would pay for just the insulation at a typical store.. tis something we continually hear n see with folks thinking they can do it cheaper themselves, more often than not they cant.

Thanks everyone. We went with the R30 and the family installed it a little here and there over two afternoons.

We used the little wire hanger dealees. Thinking about running a furing strip also every 3-4' on the bottom of the joists to help hold the bats up. As of yet, none have fallen down. Worth doing or no?

If those metal wire things worked, your good to go... My joists were a bit too wide and the metal things flipped over and fell out, allowing the batts to drop down in places... The curve wasn't enough to push into the wood of the joists...

you should be able to get longer tiger teeth(the metal wires) and just use them . dont know how big a space yer talking but if you cant find larger tiger teeth perhaps a mesh would be cheaper than fur strips would. deer mesh works well for this no need to get wild n crazy expensive stuff

                  Roger that, gracias...

At this point the metal wires seem to be holding up fine so I'll stick with those.

I just built a man cave / barn / prep location with r 30 in the walls and ceilings and love it. Our home has r30 in the attic as well and its always comfortable even without using the homes ac in the summer here in mid georgia.
So I say overbuild it and enjoy it later.

I work from home, out of our garage. A few months ago, my awesome husband pulled up the floorboards in the attic over the garage and put in R30. Then he put the floor boards back down. It makes a HUGE difference. I would love to have R30 over the rest of the house as well.
