  • Turnover File

Hey guys. I was trying to get together a turnover file of sorts for my wife in case anything happens while I

Have you tried googling "what to do in the even of <fill in the blank>" that should give you some starters. Also there is a nice booklet out there called "Its a Disaster!..and what are you gonna do about it?" Here is a screen shot of some of what it covers related to the types of disasters:

Disclaimer: I have no financial ties to this organization, I got a free ebook from another forum and I helped them fix a printing issue with the free mini-ebook. Nice folks that are trying to help. This is a non-profit org.

If you want more info PM me.

Have you asked her what she would like, or how she would like it organized.

It sounds you have most of the info already, just about how to organize it. I know the way i would organize it is not the best way for my wife to try and read it in a crisis.

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus. Not a bad thing we just don't and react alike.

I have a 3 ring binder with the catagories of:
        Bugout
Earthquake with 2 plans one to stay and one to leave
        Firestorm
        Snow/Ice Storm
and I'm currently working on civil disturbance plans using the photo range card concept but adding in the items to be used for blockade and where they need to be placed. i have been out measuring between trees near the roadway and taking pictures.
E-mail/PM me and i will send you an example copy of the blank sheet if your interested

This is a GREAT idea... I have printed informational stuff, but it is somewhat scattered... I need to make a "Turnover File"... Plus, I know in stress she may forget passwords and file locations... I do have an inventory printed list though, so she knows where something is stored, or in what bin (which are labeled by letters... A, B, B1, B2, BUGOUT1, etc...)

Thanks for the additional work... LOL!

              Well,
The FEMA .pdf "Are You Ready" (I found this on the "Prepper Ads" thread, right here) ... THAT doc (which I downloaded and read) talks about familiarizing one's self with the particular risks and threats in one's own particuar region ... in terms of "priorities/prioritization".

The Gulf Coast would obviously have hurricanes, high, on the list, etc. In Texas, Ice storms are a bit lower but, because the Texas state and local authorities (AND residents) are WAY LESS prepared, for ice, ... when serious protracted freezes *DO* occur? ... it wreaks havoc ... power goes down and stays down ... nobody down here has a clue how to drive on ice (or has chains) so ... the freeways get clogged with abandoned wrecked vehicles, etc.

Anyhoo ... I did not see PLAGUE on your list and that is prolly one of THE most likely scenarios ... Like the Influenza Epidemic of 1918, that killed SO many ...
Now ... Quarantine (in a way) won't help because you will (and must) eventually get exposed ... and you will either beat it or you will not ... Like the Latin American Natives and American "Indians", had do deal with Small Pox ...
... No matter how long they stayed isolated, they were eventually exposed to the general population, and carriers of that disease ...
... BUT ... There *IS* still a reason to isolate yourself/family, during these epidemics (which are guaranteed, BTW) ...
*MY* logic (from studying the progression of the 1918 Infuenza Epidemic) is that ... LOTS OF PEOPLE WILL BE DROPPING LIKE FLIES, ALL AT ONCE ! ... This statistical surge will (did) completely overwhelm the Professional Medical Community and killed MANY of THEM, as well ... MANY MANY people died, simply because there was nobody to nurse them ... They were too weak to get up and find water or even to re-wet the cool rag on their own brow ... The whole family was very sick and nobody was well enough to make a simple broth, which would have sustained many ...
... And, simple services and supplies, like firewood and grocery supply chains were sporadically interrupted.

SO ... MY POINT ... If you can WAIT TO GET SICK ... Then there will be enough medical professionals and supplies and services to give you (and yours) a MUCH better chance of surviving.

This same logic also applies to hunkerring down (in ANY disaster scenario) and having ~60+ days of preps, in reserve ... Because there will be a WAVE ... a SURGE in demand, for supplies and services and skills that will be far in excess of what is available ... for a "good-while" in some (or many) cases.

This epidemic may be just as simple and natural as a particularly virulent strain of infuenza ... or it might be the result of a blunder, by some phrarma corporation or gummit research lab ... OR ... It just might be an intentional attempt at Eugenics, by some government or NGO (or even one insane researcher) ... Or, just thru contact with animals, etc.

Whatever the PLAGUE scenario ... The longer you can stay isolated, the more time researchers will have to find a more effective treatment, or cure ... or just to better identify just what sort of pathogen is killing everybody. And, of course, to burn the dead and bury the corpses and get all the bodies out of the public drinking water sources, etc.

At Hiroshima, a great many people (skin falling off) jumped into the river ... a literal ""log-jam" of dead bodies, floating in the river.

So ... yeah ... EPIDEMIC should be pretty high, on everyone's list ... That and "Protracted Drought".

Also, just study the history of your city and region. Folks in Texas and OK (and anywhere, really) should definitely have a soid plan (and shelter) for tornados and for SEVERE lightning/wind/hail type storms ... Securing the main breakers, BEFORE the strike, ... getting away from (and obstructing) large glass windows (small ones too).

And ... if the power goes down ? ... water services will/may prolly go down and so may cell towers.

My family was snowed into our house, during the Chicago Blizzard of 1969 ... for weeks.

People in the Mississippi Flood zones will prolly end up needing to boil all drinking and bathing water, on a regular basis, and be ready to lift their furniture up on blocks, etc ... keep a john-boat or canoe, in the yard, or garage ... hip-waders, etc.

But look at the Japanese ... THOSE folks are "National Preppers" ... They have been working on preparedness for Earthquakes and Tsunamis, for decades ... even the books, on their shelves, have retainers and their appliances may be bolted-down ... BUT ... they REALLY got clobbered ... badly ... I will be studying if (and "what/which") preps actually made a difference, from one neighbor, to the next, once that data becomes available (is fully collated).

I do not know if this will actually help anyone, but I am waiting for my upstairs neighbor to get out of the shower, so I will have more pressure, for my own shower, so, I decided I would "bend your ears", in the mean time.

              =later=

The tornado needs no sheet, it is haul yourself to the hole and what will remain is the supplies in the hole, you might get to grab a purse, rifle and some meds unless you do like we did and just went anyway when it started getting bumpy.
Epidemic, seems like I'm in better shape at isolation from the outside than you my friend, that would be one you need in the highrise. My book is incomplete and ever growing as anyones would be. I dont have terrorism, nukes or a whole lot of stuff yet. It takes time and planning and priorities with my time. I save these for inclimate weather days or days I dont feel good.
The book/SOP and the Turnover File ideas are great for everyone to work thru the OODA loop and should be a consideration for most everyone. If Military Operators have them then there is no reason for anyone not in those high stress functions not to IMO.

Having NO idea of your wife's mechanical/logical knowledge and ability, I might suggest from a female point of view that you take time each weekend, maybe, to physically walk her through those "instructions" You say for nuclear stuff, get a radiation monitor out of the garage, put in kitchen and turn on - is the on/off control/button clearly marked OFF and ON? Does the unit use batteries? Where are the spares and how does one put new ones in? How does one read it, as in what do those dials show anyway?? Your instructions make logical sense to you, but has she ever done any of this herself? When I was being taught how to get my gennie up and running and then plugged in for well pump power, I had to write clearly, STEP 1, STEP 2 and detail those steps to include the color or shape of the plug, control lever, switch etc. even drew rough sketches of locations on the gennie in case someone else was trying to get it going. Just a thought to consider.

OK, here is what I've come up with for earthquake. Note: I have a research reactor 5 miles and a large power reactor 35 miles from my house and I am in a bend of the missouri river with only 2 bridges within 75 miles. Please be critical as this may save me a whole bunch of trouble.

                    Earthquake
                    1. Put boys, Ivan, B.O.B.’s, diaper bag, gas cans, radiation monitor, and fire proof safe in car.
                    2. Before re-entering the house, turn off gas at main and electricity at main breaker.
                    3. Look at house and if it looks unsafe return to car, if neighborhood looks unsafe drive to rally point. (Pierpont store)
                    a. Turn on cell phone and call me, and or wait for me to call you.
                    b. Turn on radiation monitor and set in back window. If monitor starts to detect radiation and you have no contact with me then follow EVACUATION instructions.
                    4. If house looks OK then get radiation monitor and put on table and turn on.
                    a. If monitor starts to detect radiation and you have no contact with me then follow EVACUATION instructions.
                    5. Find cell phone and try to call me. If no contact keep phone on you till you hear from me.
                    6. Turn on radio to 93.9 and listen for updates.
                    7. Fill bathtub, sinks, and any container you can find with water. Be VERY careful when opening cabinets as things might have shifted.
                    8. Check neighbors.
                    9. Sweep up any fallen glass or debris.
                    a. If weather is bad use plastic sheeting and duct tape from quarantine kit to cover broken windows or holes in house.
                    10. Bring kids and Ivan back inside.
                    11. Call family in California and let them know you are OK.
                    12. Relax for a while, play with kids till they are calmed down. Remember I may be Federalized and not able to return home right away. If your dad calls try to convince him to go to our house till it’s safe.

Excellent! the only other thing i have done on my sheets is to add the locations of all prepositioned supplies. In other words the plastic sheets are in the garage, the water is in the bathroom closet etc. I find that during stress simple things will leave the mind.

Here is the next one I have done. Again please do not hold back.

                        Evacuation

                        1. Put boys in car.
                        2. Get cell phone and turn on.
                        3. Grab evacuation kit from shelf by the hot water heater and put in passenger floorboard.
                        a. Open the kit, on top will be 2 trash bags and a map, get them and close kit.
                        4. Put B.O.B.’s in trunk along with guns from safe, ammo boxes 1 thru 4 in safe, fireproof safe, gas cans, and diaper bag.
                        a. Put diaper bag in last so you can access it.
                        5. Take the 2 trash bags to the bedroom and stuff a collection of our clothes in them.
                        a. Start at the top drawer and work your way down. Grabbing some in each drawer.
                        b. Make sure to get clothes for all 4 of us.
                        c. This should be done very quickly and should take no more than 3 minutes.
                        6. Put clothes bags in passenger seat.
                        7. Put as many 2 liter water bottles from garage as will fit on floorboard of back seat.
                        8. Turn off gas at main and electricity at main breaker.
                        9. Put Ivan in backseat in between boys.
                        a. Leave his leash on.
                        10. Put dog food bag in front seat.
                        11. Fill trunk up with as many cans of food as you can. Starting with the #10 cans in garage, then fill up the rest of the space with cans from pantry.
                        12. Lock house and leave.
                        13. Follow evacuation route on map from evacuation kit.
                        14. Do not stop for anyone or anything.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE ARE YOU TO GO TO ANY CAMP, SHELTER, RALLY POINT, OR HOSPITALITY CENTER BEING OFFERED BY GOVERNMENT.

Consider allowing more than 3 minutes to get those clothes bags stuffed, especially having to open and close drawers and go to 2 different rooms. Also maybe put those clothes bags in the back floor boards over the water bottles as protection for the water from boys feet and dog and also a bit of "disguise" for them plus if necessary to sleep in the car, the boys have a bit of room to safely and comfortable stretch out a bit. That way when the dog food bag goes in the front seat the driver can be able to see out that passenger side window!

Lots of work to do to customize this for your family but it will be worth it weight in chocolate to her if it is written so she can understand it. Also have staged rehearsals for each topic. This should clear up a lot of confusion. Remember when under a lot of stress people tend to make more mistakes.
