  • Finally!

After an extra year in Germany waiting on a court martial, I've finally arrived at my next duty assignment. So begins the great house hunting saga and attempts to find that perfect location. I'm already looking at places on www.openhouseok.com and have found some nicer ones I'm going to take a look at. I have to sign in today, but tomorrow I head out to start the adventure in finding a home, hopefully one that will be my retirement place.

Any advice for a new Okie transplant?

Boy Oklahoma is HOT! Can ya'll turn on the air conditioners or something?

Only thing I would advise is get out of Oklahoma County the property taxes are outrageous. Stay East of the I-35 corridor the water on the Western side is so hard it will almost knock you out taking a shower.

Out here East of Norman, McCloud,Tecumseh or Shawnee areas are much cheaper and not as many restrictions on what you can and can't do.

Welcome home and a big thank you for your service! Come on down to North Texas. Nice and cool here. It barely breaks 100 degrees during the day!

                Welcome back Sir.

I'm guessing since you are asking here on S&P your looking for a place with "retreat" or "homestead" type qualities.

Honestly I believe you could find good homestead qualities anywhere in Oklahoma so I can't give much detail.

I live in Pawnee Co. and the only thing that comes to mind at the moment is I would stay away from wide open spaces. Especially large areas of flat land. In my mind, it's easier to "hide" a retreat with a little bit of hills. I don't think I would like the really flat plains area, where the only thing that slows the wind down, is a three-strand barbed wire fence. To me, flat land is not where I would want to be for security reasons.

Which would put you toward the more eastern side of the state, like the Arbuckle hills in the southern part of the state. There are also rolling hills in the north-east. Not to mention the hills have a large amount of vegetation and it looks really cool in the fall.

Of course all this is my opinion, but I hope it's something to think on and helps some.

Welcome Home and thanks for your service and top notch writings. I have a "Bud" here in Georgia who is a former Oakie. He is about my generation, Nam, Arty lad, only 71. Still ( not Sill) has a house there but he has found the perfect gun friendly state, Georgia, with a castle doctrine, includes your fenced yard, low taxes, milder climates and ample water and fuels. I suggest you take a computer look at North Georgia in the Eastern portion, near the Carolina border. Western North Ga has been a haunt for severe WX for generations. Indian lands up near N. Carolina. There are ample sources of land near National Forests. Stay away from the Blairsville tax areas

Oh, I found a great place. Directions include "turn off paved road" lol. Way, way out there.

Only problem is it's almost 45 minutes away from base. Shorter with going through the "bad" part of town (the one I've been encouraged to stay away from)

Still looking, but finding nice places in decent areas so far. Nicer out east, but I haven't checked the south yet near Norman or Moore yet.
