  • Squash difficulties and questions

I have 3 of these. On the same bushes are regular squash.

On some of the bushes I have these:

Why are some of the baby squash shriveling?
What are those big round squash?

I uses squash I grew from seeds saved from last year. All squash last year was normal!

    Help!

the bottom pic looks like a lemon summer squash, basically same as the top one but shaped like a lemon :) squash shriveling is usually poor pollination or blossom end rot

If you saved seed from hybrid plants they won't grow true to what they were. The shriveled ones are ones that don't get pollinated most likely. To make sure they get pollinated you can take a feather and rub it on the pollen from a male flower and then rub it gently all over the inside of the female flower to hand pollinate.

No this were ordered from Southern Seed Exchange and I rechecked the order with their website. They were non-hybrid heirloom seed. I wrote to the company. I don't see how it got crossed pollinated. The seeds were planted last year in a back yard in a neighborhood of nothing but homes. But obviously that's what must happened.

i often get funny plants from heirlooms.. a seed or two of another variety gets in the pack... no big deal really, just gives you more variety.... i dont think TR meant yours got cross bred rather just asking if they could have...

another use for dreaded hair.. i use a dread as my handy dandy pollinating device... monkey, just take something whispy n hand pollinate your flowers for a while, it should take care of the shrivel
