  • What are you working on?

Around the homestead? What spring projects are you working on? What's on tap for the summer?

Around these parts we are working on a number of projects. Just finished cutting and splitting enough wood to refill the shed. The boy hasn't finished stacking it yet, I let him do a little bit every afternoon after school and running.

Finishing up some "hardening up" renovations to a couple outbuildings. Started a couple new hives. Some further renovations to the range.

What's going on at your homestead?

fencing off another 2 acres for the 4 horse brings total up to six acres of pasture, new domestic garden, have focused the last few years on transplanting wild edibles not already found on my property, wood as always, always with the wood, building a new bridge across the creek on the close side of the property have one on the other side, and the big on is digging a "root cellar" into the side of the back hill on pasture #2 should be well hidden for bug out and cold storage

            LOL at Protus,
I've been tending the garden. I need to visit one of the upickit blueberry places, probably all out by now. I want to can some blueberry preserves, and do them like one of my uncles usta.

This blog is about the first thing that comes to my mind.

to see how I have my garden set up. It's experimental this year. In the fall, I hope to plant something a little better, maybe add a couple more 4 X 4 boxes, and build some trellises (trellisi?)
I've never done boxes before, never had to worry about poor dirt like they got around here, and so far, they've been a lot of fun!
My youngest (2 in Sept) really likes 'helping' me water the plants. To her credit, she does a good job of keeping the water off the leaves!

Hopefully, we will be able to build a chicken coop this weekend. 18 three week old chicks in a brooder in the house is about 18 too many!!! We also need to put up fencing for the goats. DH has been working like crazy to clean up some of the property.

Working the garden mainly. Have a good bit of wood to finish splitting, and need to build a new wood rack/shed, just need to find the time.

Going to take a weeks vacation and build a screen porch on the back of the house, overlooking the horse stalls. Dang! That reminds me, gotta build another stall. And the Shelter Logic we've been using to store hay for the last several years needs to be replaced with a real shed.
And if I had time and money (I have neither) I'd make a start on my Ford F150 hot rod project.
Oh, well. Just a couple of years until retirement, then I get to work on the homestead full time.

Out here in the hills we are mostly concentrating on getting things to grow.
                          The garden is looking good.
Also preparing to preserve it all once it begins to come in.
                          Looking for a decent dehydrator.
Waiting for the Big Berkey to be delivered (My Mother's Day present)...
Need to build a stand for the water tank so when filled it will be a gravity fed system....also get the gutters up on the shop to catch the water.
I am also growing Moringa trees, whose leaves are an amazing supplement once they are dried and ground into powder. First year trying my hand at that.
Also planning to get Red Wigglers set up in a vermicomposting bin (since the critters all get into the compost otherwise).
I planted mostly heirlooms in the garden this year, so I am going to be seed saving. First year for that too (kinda sorta).

And we got rain today for the first time in...months. Yippee!!

                            spring

                            Hi Protus,
This spring I started my garden in the garage at my primary residence. It turned out to be a good idea as we had a couple of late freezes. My little plants are doing well in the heat now in my raised bed. I tried a vertical mulch potato planter. I think my mulch must have been contaminated, because they dried up and died. I tried the left-over potato starters in my dirt pile in the shade and it is working just fine. Go figure. Beginning this weekend, I'm going to pic areas to put raised beds at my BOL. I didn't plan my location well and my areas for food production are limited because of shade from trees and house. Live and learn. Purchase a smaller and more durable BOB that will not carry the kitchen sink. Pack and load, 32 lbs.

What I have done lately is read, study others and I have tried to have people teach me the basics of canning and hunting for the moment. Since I am in medic school, that takes a lot of my time up for the moment, but that is coming to a close in the beginning of August…

In August, I am going to be taking a work shop on building a straw bale house- not exactly a big prep, but shelter (good shelter) is something I am looking forward too.

I am starting my organic seed collection this June or July. I have clinicals, so it makes time a little bit more difficult. For those who have already done clinicals, you know about what I am saying.

More classes and having people teach me after school is out-
                              Aquaponics and Hydroponics
                              H2H combat (various schools)
                              Sword and Knife tactics
                              Gun Tactics
                              Canning equipment
                              Small Appliance repair
                              Home remodeling techniques
Classes on Wine, Cheese, and other home made crafts
                              Beekeeping
                              Advanced Medical training- medical corps
                              Continue in my workouts

Ultimately by the end of 2012, I hope to have purchased my own farm/ranch area and continually working it to be what I need it to be.
