Thanks Briar! Now that the roof is done, catchment is next on the list. Thanks for the tip. Going to use the water for the garden as a backup. Now I siphon irrigate out of a spring-fed pond. Hope you start a thread like Admin requested. Thanks again.
Thanks for the input on metal roofs. We will need to replace our roof in a year or two and had not considered metal until talking it over with a couple of Minneapolis roofing contractors who have installed several of these. This summer has been fine, but the two previous summers really did a number on our asphalt shingles with hail. While I thought that future hail storms would be very loud on a metal roof, my research shows that it actually cuts down on the noise. Has anyone had any experience with this?
Big fan of metal roofs. Our current house started out with as a shingle roof and now has a metal roof over top on lathe strips. Something I didn't notice mentioned with shingles is when the roof is wet and it freezes some of the asphalt granules will come loose and end up in the gutters and then your rain barrels. Same deal if you have snow/ice on them and chunks start sliding off the roof as it starts to melt, a lot more of those granules come off too. More stuff to filter out. I power wash the roof metal when I do the house and check for loose screws, bad rubber washers and finish/coating issues.
Ok, now I have another question about a metal roof: Does it affect your satellite television reception? We already seem to have challenges but have heard that, when it comes to Dish tv Portland is a viable option. I don't want cable, but need the satellite for internet access and feel that in an emergency situation satellite will be a better way to go. Any thoughts?
We've had our metal roof long enough now to come to a conclusion. We were wondering about cell 'phone reception, attracting lightning, satellite reception, etc. So far, nothing. Can't tell a bit of difference about anything with the new metal roof.
Some of the dealers are in for the metal roofing process to enable your needs.... the only think is that you have to locate the best service dealers for the roofing process.... The cached domains are well on the service i think... make the use on!
Don't know much about the price of a metal roof but love the sound of the rain on it at night. Hailstorm not so much, although the kids always thought it was exciting to hear the pounding of the hail on the roof. Makes for a dramatized hailstorm, lol. Quite a few people have steeper metal roofs here in the NW part of MT because the snow slides off them. Ever tried shoveling snow off a shingeled roof?? Not fun, esp when it weighs about 30 pounds per square foot like it did in the big snow of 95/96!
mtnmom5 - I was born & raised until I was 10 yoa under a metal roof in Arkansas. I mean you could lay in bed and look up and see the lathes and corrugated galvanized roofing. Loved it when it rained. Like taking a sleeping pill effect on me. In that way I was a little disappointed with this metal roof. It's over a 5/8" deck, tar paper, shingles, and tar paper again. I can hear rain even less than with just the shingles. Makes my wife happy about less noise, but I miss it. Haven't had any hail yet, bet I can hear that. This a big roof, 53 squares, and cost $11,400. The wind on top of this mountain was taking my 3-tab shingles almost every storm. So far good in that department. No heavy snows yet. Parts of this roof is steep - 12/12 pitch! Worried about sliding snow taking my gutters off. Next project is to set up a rain-harvesting system.
Thinking about a new metal roof on my house next time. Puta new roof on here 10 years ago, and already have leaks. Havinga hard time locating where it is coming in at.
My only problem is weird angles and such on my roof being a cape cod on part and a mansard barn type on the other with little parts sticking out here and there.
Just need to find someone who really knows what they are doing and pick up the tricks.
Hate having someone else do the work on my house, because I am never sastified with the shortcuts they take and end up redoing it myself anyway.
458,
Do you have leaks in the summer or winter or both? Do you have central air?
I had the drain on my central air unit plug up and thought it was a roof leak for the longest time.
