  • Time spent at secondary BOL

Last week the family and I spent a few days at a friends retreat (our secondary BOL). I took a bit of vacation time while our son was on Spring break from school, and we spent a few days visiting and roaming my friend's retreat. They are in the process of setting it up for the eventual move to it as their primary residence in the near future.

He and his family have been without water at the farm for about a month, due to the well pump going out. All water to be used by his family and ours was brought in by the two of us. I took one of my 55 gal. water barrels and some bottled water, and he brought bottled and several 5 gal. jugs for his.

They finally managed to get enough money together to get a new pump, and with the help of a good neighbor next door, we managed to get their water back before I left around mid week.

It allowed me some insight into what was needed to keep the tap on at their rural property, and what might be needed when my family will be ready to make our move to some similar in the future. I learned a few things about plumbing for a well, and about being prepared for problems that we can't foresee with the running of a rural piece of property.

Each time I visit, I try to do whatever is needed in the way of helping them with some project or major chore to help with the maintainenece and running of their place, not only because it is my family's secondary BOL, but because I don't want to impose on their goodwill for letting us stay there when we visit. There is a long list of things that they want to do and accomplish, and when I get some extra time to help, I'll make the long trip, and gladly roll up my sleaves when I'm needed.

By the way.......each chore allows me to add a bit of knowledge to my skill set, and I include my son in all of them as much as possible, so that he can learn a few of them as well.

"It has been said that preparedness and being prepared promotes fear. This isn't true.......being UNPREPARED is what promotes fear"
