  • Some surprises from my kids this week

Well this week I am reminded that you just never know what your kids are picking up and retaining as far as survival related knowledge. My 17 year old son and I were out in the back yard this weekend doing some work on the chicken coop. He turns to me and says, "wow, Mom, look at all this food" as he is surveying our yard. I'm a little bewildered and wonder if he's talking about our four mobile Sunday dinners who are quietly chasing bugs around the yard.

"Mom, didn't you pay attention to the weed lecture? This is stuff you can eat." he says as he points out the edible weeds in my yard.

Now it has been several months since we attended the awesome hands-on class on wild edibles from the foraging expert while at the January Florida campout/ Meet and Greet. I almost let my son hang out in the tent while we went on the walking lecture as I really didn't think it would be of interest to him. But thankfully, he decided to take part and learn a thing or two. And while he doesn't know the names he was able to give me specifics that made it clear he had retained a whole lot more than dear old Mom. I had to get my notebook and pictures out and flip through lots of hastily penned notes to conclude we have tons of Lepidium virginicum or Poor Man's Peppergrass in our yard. The boy just knew we had food there. LOL

Never underestimate just how much info is seeping into those brains even when they don't seem like they're paying too much attention.

Unrelated bonus surprise. And then to top off the weekend my darling daughter shows up to give me a gift she just knew I had to have.

I bet I'm the only Mom in the neighborhood with ice trays that make cubes shaped like rifle cartridges. I so love my kids. :D

I think I retained about 3 plants from the class in Jax. Hated that I had the flu and had to bail Saturday night and miss his class that Sunday. I need to hit another one in Jax...
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

        LOL, very cool.

Yeah, not all up to par on my herbology or what ever that is. I say, buy the book. Cuz if "the end" comes, we're not gonna have the internet available. And at that point, I'll have some idle time to read about plants. :D
