Matt, believe it or not my husband and his father actually build a bomb shelter in their back yard. This was in the late 50's and as of the 1990s it was still there and intact.
You could buy plans to build one of these bomb shelters and were encouraged to do so by the government. My husband said that yes, it would protect from nuclear fallout, etc. However, the ventilation system and room for storage of supplies for a long stay left something to be desired.
Anyone on the built one of these? -
