  • Shelf Life of Dehydrated Foods.

Does anyone on the forum have experience in dehydrating fruit and vegetables? Last summer I dehydrated a lot of fruit and vegetables. So far all my dehydrated food looks good.

I want to know how long foods like dehydrated bananas or pineapple will last? i.e. in 10 years will they still be good?

I'd trying to decide whether to buy the Thrive or Mountain House product or just do my own?

    Thanks.

I would hazard a guess that how you pack them will impact how long they last i.e. mylar bags and O2 absorbers :)

I don't know how long it's supposed to last but my wife and daughter dehydrate a lot of food and pack it with oxygen absorbers in mason jars.

Maybe Lowdown wil chime in, he's the food storage expert of the forum.

i have had apple slices in a mson jar go 1 yr. The main issue is you have to make sure the moisture content of the food is low...way low.
with most fruits ( apples, bananas etc) just go as dry as you can. same with others. Your gonna re hydrate them most likely anyhow, so let em dry good. Then if you want run some test batches. and check on them every so many months so you know.

The food I dehydrated last year is in vacuum bags, inside unsealed mylar, under my bed. The reason I haven't seal it is that I keep checking them for signs of mold or fungus - yuk! I have lots of canned dehydrated food, but I was thinking to save a lot of money and do my own. But after a year, I keep thinking I should seal the mylar and you 02.
