  • Problem with too large of breakers?

So had a Homer Simpson duh moment...

Calculating what was needed for ours and a friend's solar expansion, I added up amperage instead of voltage on a series string.

JP Solar 340 watt panels. 37 volts, 9.48 amps per. On one of the runs we have set up 3 rows of 4 each. My plan initially was to string 4 together and then run output to Midnight Solar combiner box.
Adding up the AMPERAGE and adding 25% for safety I came to 50 amp breakers for the combiner box. Closest ones Midnight solar makes are 60amp. OK then, 3 strings tying in to each box each on a 60amp breaker.

    Duh...

So I figured it out before the install thankfully. But now I have 60 amp breakers- six of them total (3 for his install, 3 for one of mine that was supposed to be set up similar).
Clearly this is going to be WAAAYY oversized for the actual amperage.

Will that be a problem or should I find smaller breakers?

    As you said....
When you series the panels, you increase the voltage.
When you parallel the panels in you increase the amps/current.
As you said, sizing the breaker at 25% over expected amps/current is generally considered good practice AS LONG AS your wires are rated to handle that current.
I usually oversize my wires at double the anticipated current for two reasons.
First to assure the wire can handle the current but also by oversizing the wire size (considering you are using DC and not AC, you will minimize voltage drop due to the length of the wire run.
I've noticed that the lower amp breakers aren't common in solar amps and bigger ones appear to be installed to stop any dead shorts that may occur (which isn't really bad idea).
If it was me and I put in 50 or 60 amp breakers I'd be content with them.
My thinking is AC breakers are more critical to be sized to prevent hot melting wiring. In DC apps, not so much but that's just me.
Good to see folks doing what you're doing.

Thank you. Was thinking it was o.k. but a professional second opinion is always smart to get!
