  • Kerosene Longevity

I have tried searching online and find many different time frames on how long one can store K-1 kerosene. I have a kerosene heater that uses K-1, and it works well. I would like to find out how and how long to store k-1. I have seen its good for 'up to 3 months' to people stating 'I knew someone who used 10 year old stuff and no problems'. I know water/condensation is bad, but any thoughts from those here? I do not use this heater often currently, but may start using it again. Used in a TN cabin I use to own and now I want to start using it in my CONEX home I am building.

I've run 15 year old K-1 and had no problems, but I store it in 17gallon metal drums (baby version of 55gallon drums)

Nice...good to know. I take it you keep the metal drums inside a barn/building/garage to reduce condensation?

        Actually, no.
They are leaned against the outside back wall of the hay shed at an angle to minimize rainwater retention on the top of the drums to prevent rusting of the top.
That area gets minimal sun heating being hidden from the sun by the shed in one direction and forest in the other direction.
I mainly assure the large and small threaded plugs are well tightened. None have ever exploded but you do have to be careful when opening the plug because in the summer you will hear the pressure hiss and it can spray liquid out if you're not careful
