One thing to consider is that there will be fires everywhere when the power goes out. The woods will be filled with refugees who will stop to make a fire and leave the next morning, it's doubtful they will take properly put out their camp fires. Thus forest fires will be a concern. As for wood stoves, try hard to find wood that gives off the least amount of smoke, (not pine!) and try to keep it hot, not letting it smolder. It's going to be tough if you live close to a paved road. Fortunately my BOL/HS has a NG well. so cooking will be relatively easy.

@Davar: I am not recalling it (if I even know it), what is a NG well again?

NG well - Natural Gas. I WISH I had one. I almost bought some property with 2 (!), but the house wasn't "nice" enough for the Mrs. Oh well. NOw I get to chop wood for exercise...

Be in a community of preppers. :D

No but honestly, smell discipline isn't thought of too often by anyone.

For me it would be a combination of LP/Solar Oven/Gen Set/Woodstove. Each would be used according to what happened to make me go in this mode.

I live in a condo building that is 7 stories high with 110 units ... about 25 units are owner occupied ...
... When someone cooks chicken (or burns pizza), you can smell it all over that floor and two floors above.

So, yes ... I had already considered this and I already have a partial solution ...

My first 60 days are "Ready to Eat" food, and those 2.5 Gallon plastic store-bought jugs of water ...
... I plan to expand this to a full 90 days, ASAP ... along with mechanical proximity alarm (for sleeping) ...
... And, of course, a 12GA cruiser loaded with #3 buck and a daylight LASER on the mag tube.
This way, with a bucket-potty and toilet paper and kitchen bags, I would not need to leave the condo for (at least) sixty days, if the situation warranted that sort of freakish caution.

I also have a very real and practical plan for harvesting rain-water from our rather large sub-roof, to which my window has exclusive access but, I will not even need to expose myself, in that regard, until all my stored water is consumed.

So ... Sounds really paranoid but ... folks WILL turn into flesh eating zombies (who want to be your new best friends) ... Problem is ... you must sleep ... so ... I intend not to answer the door unless someone tries to break in ...
... I will give only one verbal warning, in that instance ... maybe none, depending on what I hear going on ... on my floor.

Things will get really bad after everyone's 72 hour kits ... or 2-week cupboards have been consumed.

Folks with kids will use their parental responsibilities to justify literal bloody murder, in their own minds.

The office manager already knows I am a prepper ... she recieves deliveries, for me and I have had a few questions about my BoB, during a few false fire evacs. Now, I do not evac just because of the alarm ... I ain't budging if I do not smell smoke ... at least, not with my (rather substantial) BoB, strapped on.
