I’m usually late to the game on a lot of things, so here is another. Starting a from-cold fire in my small fireplace is, at times, a challenge and I usually sacrifice at least two logs to get the temp up. Kindling first, then small thin sticks, then logs as I have always done. I watched a video from someone who starts his backwards. Large logs on the bottom, medium in the middle, kindling and fire starter in the top. Try it, it works great! By the time the kindling starts the medium logs, the t-stat turns the fan on.

I'll have to tell my husband to try that next time he starts a fire; too late for today as we already have one going!

      hmm... well i ain't never...
      do what?
      put the biguns on first?
apologies bill... but that's the series of thoughts that went through my head.... and a few similar..
someday when you get my young age, you'll understand the strong inclination to do the same thing you've been doing for as long as the ole brain can remember.
then i remembered you have sure made some mighty fine posts on here before.
