  • Gophers....

Just a tip, but sometimes, these little darlings can be harder to get rid of then most people know. One easy way, is a road flare. You find the newest hole, dig down until you see the hole opening. At which point you take the road flare and set it into the hole and cover it up with dirt and smoke the little bugger. This may take 1-2 tries, but never has it taken more than twice. My father calls it "giving him a cigar".

As with all elements regarding fire, please be careful and stay safe.

No pleasure in that. I like traps and 22 subsonic CBs that away I can see my body count:) I ain't ate one of them yet but it has crossed my mind to give it a try just to see prior to SHTF. Good tip though.

      Matt, I like the design....

Sadly, we go with the Cigar route due to my parents living in the burbs in Seattle. Seattle is very "green" minded and also, we have the most interesting neighbors....

Case in point, we at first were using the sonic things and less obvious tactics, until one day we came home and saw our good neighbor using a pitchfork on our lawn where he had spotted the gopher trying to come up. Since he has a garden next to us, it is only logical where he would go next. We are on good terms with him and didn't mind him and his actions (aerating the lawn for free). However, one of our neighbors did mind, called the police and then called the home owners association as to our cruelty to animals. The officer was quite dumbstruck when we told him that the animal in question was a gopher after he checked my parents dogs. The whole pitch fork saga got a lot of people upset, lots of paper in my folks mailbox.... so we switched to something a little less visual and unknown to people....

Where I grew up we had striped gophers, sometimes called striped ground squirrels, there is an extremely EASY way of capturing these boogers. We were kids so we weren't allowed to kill them. Take your standard 1 gallon plastic milk container, empty of course, cut the top hole to the size of a baseball. Make several for faster fun. Fill them up with water, now take one, chase down a gopher into his hole, and immediately turn the milk carton over ontop of the hole. The animals freak out, and swim right up into the milk jug. Now you can keep that one in the jug if you have more jugs, or drop him into a 55gallon barrel (what we did). At the end of a day we had over 20 on average. Dad would give us a few dollars.

Most people dont see the threat of gophers, but "gopher holes ruin horses" is my grandpa's saying.
