I'm starting to really think more about the situation after an EMP. Until now, my main concern for a SHTF event is that I'm at work, which is on a boat about 750 miles from home when it is at the dock. That means I have at least ten to twelve hours of driving, which I can't make on one tank of fuel, just to make it home. And that is if I either have permission to leave the boat, which isn't likely, or I just quit my job, which might be likely, depending on what is going on. But now I'm thinking EMP, and if I was lucky enough to be at the dock, I have one serious freaking trek to get home. Really starting to think about getting a vehicle that can operate after one. Points ignition and whatever else. But damn it's nice to be in a newer vehicle with A/C and decent mileage to make that drive every time I go to work and back. Any input about older vehicle suggestions or tradeoffs in that respect is appreciated. Also, I'm not aloud to carry a "weapon." into where I have my vehicle parked for work, which typically lasts for about a month at a time. But my main concern is the idea that I'm on the boat, we're 200 miles offshore working as usual, and we get an EMP. I'm trying to do as much research as I can about EMP's and their affects, but it sure isn't a comforting thought to imagine being in the middle of the Gulf, on a boat that no longer functions, and no comms. Start making peace with my creator? Hope we float to some land somewhere, and that it doesn't end up being Haiti or something? Maybe I'm just getting worked up for nothing, because this is a large, steel boat, with diesel engines under a lot of steel, wiring, and various other metals. Maybe my engines will do great since they are sitting in a giant Faraday Cage. I don't need spark for engines to run, and I can make the gearboxes clutch in to move, but if the governor controls along with the rest of electronics control systems get fried, or the generators or electrical systems don't function, that could be a problem. So, what do you think? No problem, hope I'm at home when it happens (33% chance), or think about a new line of work?

Well I can address the fuel issue. If you have a pickup truck, there are many companies that sell bed tanks and upgraded fuel tanks. If I remember from my research (when I was concerned about a long drive for SHTF) increases your current stock fuel tank to a hi-capacity one adds around 5-15 gallons, but add the bed tank and you can add as much as 50 gallons (if I remember right). These two should EASILY get you to your 750 mile range on one tank.
As for the weapon, I am sure you mean firearm? Have you thougth about a fold down bow? Easily can be hidden in a vehicle and the arrows hidden inside the back cover of a seat cover. There is also the survival knives, which probably goes without saying (and should be kept on your person or a locker in your boat atleast).
As for EMP, hmmmm, can't help you there. If you have an older model engine, I think you only need to replace a few parts after an EMP, but not positive. There is always locking a bicycle in the bed of your truck, but 750miles on bike is rough, but beats walking 750miles... :)
