  • Cody Lundin Talk

Hey All, I was able to attend a talk by Cody Lundin recently, it was more of a Q & A with the audience than a prepared lecture. I found him very genuine and informative. Specifically I liked his stressing of the need to keep a positive attitude as emphasised by his borrowing of the phrase from the movie 'Wayne's World' "Party On", to illustrate this need. Also his emphasis on how survival priorities change with conditions & events. He briefly answered a question about long term prepping, with a well considered list of priorites and a suggestion to the audience to practice before a disaster in-order to find out what they failed to plan for. I bought both of his books and are reading them now, I'll keep you posted.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

No shoes, says he hasn't worn shoes except for a few times since the late '80s. Says he wears 3 pair of wool socks in the winter, and sometimes flip-flops if the snow is very wet.

i'm not going barefoot in the snow, or anywhere else for that matter, but if that floats his boat, more power to him. the man definately knows his stuff when it comes to wilderness survival. my question is, how prepared is he for societal collapse? continuing to live when the world has stopped functioning for 1-10 years is different than getting by in the bush until rescue comes. dealing with roving gangs of starving and desperate people is different than avoiding dangerous animals.

I seem to remember seeing something on Discovery about how he lives, I believe he lives pretty close to off grid, adobe type dwelling where he collects rain water etc, seemed to be very self-sufficient.

there are pictures of his self-built home, which is somewhere near Prescott AZ on his web site. It looks pretty efficient for off-the grid living. Not sure how well he is prepared, but his answers at the sessions where good. His priorities were good starting points for the audience, how to heat/cool residence, water (both immediate & long term needs), food (same as food), where to put the poop, security, and what may be number one right now could & would change.

Barefoot? OK, the reason behind going barefoot since the 80s?

All I can say is a hope he doesn't ever walk into my booby trap field in barefeet. :)

He said he likes to be bare foot so he can feel where he is walking. to each his own I say. The only episode of his tv show I've he did pull a castus thorn out of his toe.

I seen a couple of episodes of Dual Survivor and I like Cody and Dave. The barefoot thing is goofy though. In every episode I've seen he had to make some kind of footwear, why not just start out with something on you're feet?

On a side note I met Dave Canterbury at a couple of gunshows and bought some things from him, but that was long before he was on Dual Survivor.

Cody doesn't just practice survival, he lives it. His home is completely off-grid, and he lives off the land. He buys very minimul supplies. As for his walking barefoot; tribes such as the Aboriginal tribes in Australia have been walking barefoot for generations and, through what they call evolutionary processes, have genetically altered their tolerances. Cody is essentially trying to acheive the same thing in one generation. He feels more in touch with the environment and feels that by going barefoot, it forces him to slow down, hence being more aware of the surroundings allowing him to observe things that people otherwise might miss.

As for fighting off other people... well, I've been around the area he lives, he has made it possible for himself to live completely off the land, and does it every day, but the vast majority of people, even near where he lives, would not be running to his region/location to find food, or supplies, he doesn't have any. Pretty close to all the people around him would be running to places such as Flagstaff by foot, and Colorado by car(Unless during winter and they may drive toward central and southern California.

However, at the odd and unlikely chance that someone armed and violent approaches him, at his residence, he is not armed and does not believe in being so armed, therefore what little he had could very easily be taken by force. In such a situation, even if sent out away from his "Retreat", he would fair well having lived off that undesireable land for many years.

On another note, his idea seems to be that in a situation such as that, he would take it upon himself to do as much as possible to help those around him. How that would result, maybe someday soom we'll find out.
"but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved... even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children." - Matthew 24: 13; Isaiah 49: 6
