  • Digital Gun Safe Lock

Interesting question from another forum. How to protect digital gun safe lock from EMP or solar event. Is there a way to shield the external part of a digital lock? The part inside the door should be protected. A simple oblong pan could be positioned on the handle and over the external lock. Then insulating material could be added to the pan's exterior. Any suggestions?

Grounding it should help but I would not have one without a key override period.

If you don't get in the safe very often, you could use a pan as you described and use metal foil tape (like they use for dryer vent) around the edges and it should protect it.

I'm not too worried about it...

If an EMP went off, most safes are just sheet steel, so I would use a cutting wheel (if my genny made it through to power it) to cut open the side, as an EMP just went off and the last place my guns will be sitting in is in a safe. They will be put to daily use protecting...

If no power, my neighbors cutting torch...

Either way, getting in will not be too difficult given some time.

Would I rather not bother, sure... But I have what I have, I'll make the best of it...

I would use a torch to cut the hinges.

elittle depends on the quality of the safe...

cutting the hinges on my safe would only mean when you do eventually open it, the door would fall off.
my safe has locking lugs on all four edges, not just the edge opposite the hinges :)

Yep, mine has lugs on the hinge side too. Cutting the hinges will do nothing to open the door.

But the sides and rear are just sheet steel with some drywall inside.

the local safe specialist who works on all the bank equipment in the area
showed me his boxes and boxes of electronic digital locks that he had replaced.
he looked at me, tilted his head and said --"don't get one of these"
                  --
having a back up key as klayton said may solve the problem.
my safe guy is pretty smart on the subject.

i would recommend not buying a safe with an electronic lock that did not have a
                  mechanical key option.
whether it was an emp or equipment failure.. it would be bad.
