  • First Gun Show

I went to my first gun show this past weekend. I went all alone, took my cencealed weapons class, and then checked out the various vendors.

WOW! Some much interesting 'stuff'. So many different types of guns.

I did end up buying a holster to carry my gun in. Don't want is drop it into my purse unprotected. I also bought a very shape military knife (I have already managed to cut myself with it), and an axe for my sister. Seems that after Katrina, she become worried about having to avoid a flood by climbing into the attic. Then she was worried about getting out of the attic onto the roof! She says she's going to "put an axe in the attic just in case.

Anyway, will mail out all the paper work for my permit tomorrow. I had a great time.

Shows are a great place to see what is out there. I consider teh admission price paying for entertainment - like a movie ticket. and it IS hard to not come home with something.

great job monkeybird, thats the main thing i miss about not living in my home state (tennessee) is the gun shows, they have them regular and folks attend them just like church!!! i got my hcp in 1998 in tenn and have never regretted it. i liked buying guns outside of show from pvt individuals just like me,not having the fuss to register them. This way, when Obommer & company comes calling wanting this country boys guns,i will have a couple to turn in (those already registered) but will have enuff to arm a small army hid away!!! Live free!!

bountyhunter69.... i would suggest not saying that in a public forum... i am sure all gun and survival forums are monitored to some extent by big brother...

        =)

Nothing wrong with person to person purchases as long as it's not being sold to a felon.

Although not currently required to register individual purchases in Illinois, it is still bad karma to say the reason you buy from individuals so you can hide them if they are ever confiscated...

Just saying, you may not want to put them on any list... just me maybe, but im paranoid about the government when it comes to my guns...

@monkeybird - Get your sister a cordless saws all (reciprocating saw) or circular saw. Hacking from the inside of an attic chopping upwards at the roof will be more difficult than what she thinks. On second thought go with the cordless circular saw, try finding one at a pawn shop, Dewalt or Bosch. A good brand at least. 18v or 24v.

They have gun shows on a regular basis here. The main thing I've learned is to never buy the first thing you see. I nearly always find it cheaper at another table. One interesting note: There was a guy who had four tables of handguns. Nearly every single one of them were almost exactly $20 more than I could buy them for in a local gun shop. Also, if you buy from an out of town vendor, and there's a problem with the gun, who you gonna call? I've bought guns at gun shows, but I'm REALLY careful about it. As for when the feds show up to confiscate, sorry, I sold those guns just last year, to private individuals traveling through on their way to some state not here.

we have gun shows here quarterly. i live by the same rules. i always walk through at least once before buying anything expensive. there have been times that i will wait until the next day to go back so i dont make any impulse decisions. I have only bought one gun from the shows and it was a police issue smith .40. i love it. no problems at all. the gentleman had cases and cases of guns and ran a business so i wasnt too worried about getting screwed. i buy a lot of books and manuals too. they are always cheaper than store price, and amazon for the most part. plus you dont have to pay for shipping or wait for them to show up...

and if you are in the market but havent quite saved up yet, it is a great place to get a feel for lots of firearms before you buy one. better than any magazine review

By the way Monkeybird congrats and way to go. You are absolutley correct in dropping a handgun in a purse without protection. We had an incident once with that when it discharged. Thats a story and lesson for another time but good thinking.
